Should i enable tap jump i don't like it as i use jigglypuff then i just waste all my jumps but i have alot of problems trying to short hop i have a 3DS XL if that means anything.

So is there any tips or am i just bad i know you need to like half press it but it's damn near impossible...

Practice. I got a lot of my tech skills for Melee and PM either through going into training and mashing till I couldn't mash anymore, or playing 99 stock matches against lvl 1 CPUs where I did nothing but try ways to employ those skills after I got the inputs down. SHFFL took me the longest to figure out, and wavedashing is still inconsistent as hell for me, but I'm getting better. Just practice lightly tapping the jump button. I don't use tap jump myself, and on the 3DS it is rather different than what I'm acclimated to, so at times I'll wind up full hopping on accident myself.

Just don't be impatient with it. The last thing you want to do is get aggravated.

The best technique: Turn off tap jump, and do a quick press (but not hold) y or x, whichever works better for you, for a short hop.

I found that I had no trouble once I was able to turn off tap jump (demo please -.-). As silly as it sounds, are you sure you aren't already doing shorthops? I know that I'm not good at recognizing the difference between short and full hops for some characters like Jiggly where they aren't all that different.

Tap the button once and quickly. I like Y, but X is perfectly fine (and probably more optimal, X->A is faster than Y-A distancewise)

I must be really gentle or I'm just in the habit of quickly releasing buttons, because sometimes I accidentally short-hop when I wanted to do a regular jump.

just takes practice.

literally sit down for like an hour in training mode and just keep trying it out until youre consistent.

From mine and friends experiences I know of three different ways to short hop consistently. For reference I have the buttons mapped like a GCN controller (A jump : B attack : Y special).

1 (recommended as others have): Tap the jump button. I try not to use a lot of force since it might make you hold the button longer than intended. It sort of becomes a twitchy thumb motion (GCN controller) for me, and it gets the job done. I specifically used this to double laser with melee fox.

2: Some players take the tip of their finger or their nail and kind of scratch/slide it off the edge of the button so that it barely taps the button. It's kind of harder to do instant aerials using this method though. Don't know the long term negative effects of it on 3DS buttons, but it works well for the GCN controller and is very consistent.

3: Tap up on the stick. A small amount of players do prefer to do this all the time or certain situations. Don't want you to break your circle pad or anything, but hey its an option.

Hopefully you find a method that feels natural to you. Method 1 felt most natural to me. Also, try not to lift your thumbs up too much, that can be a problem for some and you may not even notice it.
