How are the previous Smash games connected to SSB4 story wise?

Now, in Smash 64, the whole concept was displayed as Master Hand being like a child, who is playing with his toys, which are the Nintendo Characters.

In Melee and Brawl, it is almost the same, except they are figurines/statues/trophies, and not children's toys, but still items of amusement nonetheless. And Tabuu was involved as the guy begin Master Hand, but that didn't change that much in concept.

From here it is easy to see that Smash is simply Master Hand playing with his toys.
Simple enough.

What confuses me is the Smash 4 trailers. The characters seem to have personalities, and reflect the actual characters in their games. Plus, it seems that Smash is an actual tournament were characters leave their world and fight.
For example, Villager was in his normal town, an revived and invitation. And Mac was actually training with Doc Louis for a tournament like he always does. And Rosalina was flying in the sky while the others were having fun driving karts. And WFT was just excersizing!

Can someone explain how the SSB4 concept of an actual tournament and the 64/Melee/Brawl concept of playing with toys can connect in someway?

If you have any theories please share them! I am completely clueless.

Simple.

You see, they all live in a place called "Nintendoland".
Originally thought up by the creator (Master of Hands). It started becoming it's own identity.
No one knows how you get there, or who. You just, appear. Like they were spawned or something.

So, the games?
Well, that's our look into their world.
Think of it, why does Pac-Man appear in Mario Kart.
Or Sonic can compete with Mario in the Olympics.
Their worlds are interconnected. We just never see it...

Tabuu? Well, we don't know.
But it might have something to do with creating.
...Maybe he's the reason they're there...

And, the fighting?
There's probably a pecking order over there.
We just call it a "tier list".
They probably have annual tournaments to decide who's better.
They say a an electric mouse was on top, then some Space Animals, now it's a knight and Eskimos.

Don't think too much about it. The whole invitation thing with the villager and the tournament in Brawl were likely just something neat to cook up.

I doubt they consider much of a story besides Brawl's "story". The shift from toys to trophies from 64 to later entries was likely a change in themes/motifs, and it works better when including other characters as fanservice.

Yeah, I've seen this.
That thread focuses more on the "toy concept" of 64, Melee, and Brawl.
While this thread focuses on how that universe connects with what we have seen so far with Smash 4.

Interesting.

And if you mean Nintendo Land as in the game, that is actually more of a theme park in the world that focuses on the characters' adventures.

I'd say the whole game universe is calle "Video Land," as in Captain N.
After an Apocalypse were everyone's mind and appearence gets messed up, an insane Mother Brain takes over with the help of a green King Hippo and Eggplant Wizard. But now the only remaining heroes: Simin Belmont who has turned into a flamboyant coward from the radiation messing with his mind, Mega Man who has resorted to smoking after becoming depressed (thus giving him green skin and a weird voice), and Pit who has been shrunken down and become depressed and looks emo due to the loss of his friends in the war, must all come together to defer Mother Brain, along with the help of surging human boy named Kevin Keen.
Also, The Fountain of Youth was uncovered from explosions in the ground, and Cranky Kong has become his young and gigantic self. Now back in his original and strong form, Cranky Kong become power-mad, and killed all the residents of Donkey Kong Island, renamed it Congo Jungle.

Exactly.
And SMB3 is a retelling of the events of Super Mario Bros.
All starting to make sense doesn't it?

Actually, that makes no sense at all! How is SMB3 a retelling of SMB? They have completely different plots and settings!

Well, media tends to twist stories all the time.
The same happens here...

Except it hasn't. SMB3 is clearly a sequel (hence the 3 at the end) and canonically takes place after the original. The story emphasizes that Bowser has returned, meaning that he would have had to have been encountered before (in SMB1 and LL). Also, Peach already knows Mario and Luigi, which she couldn't have if it was SMB1, and the plot of SMB1 involves her being kidnapped by Bowser while the plot of SMB3 is the Koopalings stealing the wands of the Mushroom World rulers. She doesn't even get kidnapped by Bowser until the final world of the game.

But this conversation is off-topic, so I'll stop here. But saying that SMB3 is a retelling of SMB1 is wrong on so many levels that it isn't funny...

Might be an actual crossover instead of some alternate dimension of living figurines.
