Independent servers have been created by a group called Wiimmfi and the latest version of P:M now has wiimmfi support so that now you're able to connect to those servers automatically.

Also, a lot of people use Anthers Ladder and Netplay on dolphin for a good online experience (lag wise)

Pretty much everyone uses Dolphin/Netplay. Using Brawl's wi-fi is usually an exercise in futility. And lag. So much lag.
