With the release of the newest DLC, I kinkd of want to get back into the Sm4sh scene to main muh boy, but from what I remember, the 3DS scene died when the WiiU version came out almost a year ago. Is the 3DS scene still alive at all? Is it even worth buying a 3DS?

For the record, I only have a few bucks to spare so chances are I wouldn't be able to get a WiiU and Sm4sh WiiU, plus there are games like Pokemon that I want on the 3DS.

Well there are always people on http://www.smashladder.com/ pretty much, there are enough people who still play on it. I always train on 3DS, but tournaments are almost always on wii U, but 3DS usually has a side event. Depends where you live, but if you search you could always find someone who wants to play on 3DS

Yeah, I wouldn't say dead so much as made secondary. Its a place to train now for most people. I still play it mainly since I'm too cheap to buy a Wii u tbh, but theres always someone around to run matches with

Back in January when sales numbers were announced, 3DS version sold 6~ million while the Wii U version sold 3~ million. 3DS scene will probably never die as it's the exact same game as the other one. Wii U is just the competitive standard version.

It has a healthy online community—the 3DS version's competitive potential is seen more on its Online multiplayer. It may be seen as a side event sometimes; Wii U is just the "standard" because it is easier to set up. The game is the same thing, just on a handheld. You really aren't missing out.

The 3DS version is the one that is selling more units out of the two, so this implies a lot of people play it. The competitive scene isn't just Wii U, Wii U and more Wii U.

Also, yes, definitely worth getting a 3DS. Lots of good games.

Not everyone has a Wii U, so those people might be stuck on the 3DS, it's the same for me. Heard that handheld gaming is pretty big in Japan. It's not close to dead at all. For example, you can easily get matches on the 3DS at Smash Ladder (www.smashladder.com) I'm pretty sure it will not necessarily die, just get a little dry.
