In Melee, we had trophies. In Brawl, stickers and CDs joined the fun. Will there be anything new for SSB4?

Maybe we can find "tapes", old-school VHS. They can be clips of interesting moments in Nintendo game history, extended takes of the newcomer videos, and even a few completely new animated shorts, since we're not getting SSE this time. Even just 30 of these for each version would be fair.

If that is too much, "books" could also be entertaining for some players. I am talking scans of some of the comics that have been released which can otherwise be hard to find in good condition IRL. Also, some people would outright nerdgasm for some of the old hilarious instruction manuals from back in the day. The Wii U gamepad would serve well as an e-reader.

Lastly, maybe we can find UI skins for the menus. Maybe "wallpaper"? Like tapes, they are an uncommon item.

Not to be a kill-joy, but I'd prefer if these only physically dropped in single player, but you can still get them randomly on completion of a multiplayer match.

Any other ideas?

Edit - Some AWESOME ideas from other posters
  • Cartridges (Demos of old games, with full versions available on the eShop)
  • Concept art and crossover graphics
  • Badges (Represents ones progress with a character)
  • Miiverse Stamps
  • "Behind the scenes" views of the development office
  • Minigames (ie Pokemon cards, Fire Emblem chess, etc.)
  • Alt costumes
  • Stage builder parts.
  • Coins should be able to purchase all forms of collectibles

I like the old-school manual idea.

What about virtual game cartridges? They could let you play through an iconic level in some of Nintendo's classic titles and double as a stealthy advertisement for the full game on the Virtual Console.

In all honesty, I would rather they removed stickers. They served no purpose.

"Books" and "Tapes" could easily be incorporated into trophies if they wanted to do that.

But overall, I feel that trophies, records (you saw Mew for the first time!) and perhaps CDs should be the extent to collectibles.

Edit: Forgot about origin titles. Those were pretty good.

This would be amazing! Now I really want this to happen!

I was thinking "Badges". My first idea of these badges was that you could get them by playing with a certain character A LOT. My other idea (which happens to be the one that I prefer) is that they could work kind of like a "ranking" system. Let me explain. The more battles you win online with a certain character the more points you get towards these badges. Winning could earn you something like 5 points and 2nd place could be 3 points, 3rd place could be 2 points and last place would be 1 point. Each character would have probably 10 badges which display cool Smash Art, symbols, and other things having to do with the series. For example, the 1st Mario badge could be like a bronze silhouette of him jumping on a Goomba or something. I think badges could probably be earned at certain milestones such as 10, 25, 50, 100, 150, 200, etc. Obviously, the higher the milestone the better the badge would be.

My other idea has to do with something Nintendo is already doing with certain Wii U games. Both NES Remix and Super Mario 3D World use these things called stamps. You can put these stamps on Miiverse posts to make a doodle, show them off or whatever. Maybe Smash could utilize these collectible things as well. Either that or stickers could serve the same purpose.

I like this idea. They would be like little Pixar shorts except with Nintendo characters. Sounds perfect to me.

I'd love to see unlockable crossover pictures, like the ones the four newcomers have on the main website.

Depicting various Nintendo characters in scenarios from different games. (not necessarily just from games that have playable characters) They could even make them interactive (like clicking various parts of the pictures would give you descriptions, cause an animation or even unlock something else)

Another thought I had was what if they did something similar to animal crossing new leaf and created new cover pictures for each song CD.

Wow, I came into this topic thinking "oh jeez, no more chores." I didn't really pay attention to stickers. Your ideas on the other hand totally blew me away! I would love to collect tapes of new cutscenes or books with Classic Nintendo imagery. Cool idea, I'm on board

While unlockable characters seems to be an item of controversy, it would seem Smashers are pretty unanimous in wanting more goodies to find. I suppose a lot of us expected more trophies in Brawl compared to Melee, especially since they don't really require a great deal of work from the programming side.

Thank you everyone for awesome ideas. Added them to the OP. :)

Oh god yes, microtransactions with In-Game currency are the #1 way to make a game longer and better :D I want manuals, old box arts, videos, commercials...Smash IS supposed to be a Nintendo museum, after all.

How about tapes that contain developer videos? Like one for working on each newcomer, including the design phase, and a bunch of other stuff (like how they've updated the game, veteran changes, and just some playful office vids). Then we can see Sakurai laughing in HD!

PS: I tried to post this like 4 hours ago, but I was out and my phone died lol.

It would be cool if Smash had a Krypt, similar to the Mortal Kombat franchise.
And random Nintendo characters' guts would burst out for you to claim you're prize :awesome:. 10/10

I'm thinking we'll get Stamps just like in SM3DW. But posting on Miiverse would give incentive.

Like say I went through Classic on Insane and didn't get a game over, then at the end I get a stamp or some Miiverse addition to show my achievement. Maybe even when you finish classic mode it'll allow you to post to Miiverse to share.

I think it would be cool if they gave us humorous shorts we could collect in the game, ala smash machinima style. No voices or anything just funny one off clips.

I really fancy the idea of those tapes being implemented. I can see Stickers being ousted for Stamps or something, simply because we (probably) won't need the powers they provided any longer. Or at the very least, their functionality will change.

I just remembered something from Warioware touched on the ds. I really loved how you could unlock odd toys/mini games to play with. It would be really cool if there was a similar mode in ssb4 where you could unlock and interact with Nintendo themed toys/dohickeys.

Anyone have ideas for the toys? The kookier the better.

How about a pet cucco?

How about cards based off of Pokemon!
...nah, that'd never appeal to the masses...

All of these are incredible ideas! I would love to have some concept art and "making of"s.
If alt costumes are confirmed they could also be collectibles.

I love the idea of tapes and books/manuals. I'd love if Smash became a literal museum of Nintendo history, with commercials, in-game cutscenes, and game manual scans from various games in their catalogue. Miiverse stamps would also be fun. I also like the "badges" idea. I like the idea of being able to customize some sort of tag/profile for online play, and the way FirstBlade describes this idea is pretty much how it is handled in PlayStation All-Stars: level up a character to unlock more content representing their franchise.

Perhaps the level of customization Sakurai was talking about has to do with stuff like this?

To be honest, I don't want many collectibles.
I like trophies. They are fun to collect and are a unique idea. On the other hand, I personally didn't like stickers... I found them very excessive.

For me, it would be ideal if they cut stickers all together and replaced it with 'stamps', that could be used in Miiverse.
I'd especially like it f they focused on quality over quantity: Brawl had tons of stickers, but they were just imported images. If they cut down on the amount and did only around 300 in total, but made them all original art like in Super Mario 3D World, that would be fantastic. Imagine if they had a 'stamp book' like 3D World, but did one for each individual franchise!

I wouldn't be surprised if they did actually replace/revamp stickers to simply be Miiverse stamps.

As far as adding something new though, what about if they made specific Nintendo themed props and backdrops unlockable for the stage creator, provided it returns. Maybe similarly to CD's a ? Block or something would drop onto the stage for you to grab, and at the end of the match you'd see what was "inside" the block so to speak?

this technically is still a collectible: different coins! an option to replace coins with say, rupees, or mario coins, or something else

or perhaps have collectible character coins of different types that appear at different rarities
ex.: "sweet! i just got a gold bowser coin!"
or: "another bronze pikachu coin? but i need ice climbers!"
basically something for completionists like me to do :p

No more masterpieces crap. The cartridges I like, but they have to work differently. Maybe they could actually be an unlockable event match which depicts a famous episode from a Nintendo game. Not Virtual Console bull though.

These would be nice:

- Trophies
- Stickers (this time, they're just usable stamps on Miiverse, they don't bring any gameplay change and once you find one, it'll never come back)
- CDs
- VHS's (include videos like the Newcomers intro)
- Cartridges (what I said above)
- Alternate Costumes (OBVIOUSLY)
- Customizable elements (especially for Villager for example, always in the franchise of the character though, not like "Mario hat for Snake" bull****)
- Alternate Menu Designs / Characters selection designs
- Parts for the Stage Editor (including backgrounds)

- A new dossier mode which works basically like the trophies, but describe games and not single elements. Like you have a Page for Super Mario Bros., one for Super Mario Galaxy etc., and it contains like 20 rows of description with a bunch of in-game images. Basically that Brawl "History mode" made well.

- They could add a new extremely rare collectible. It's basically a character-specific item you can randomly find by playing with said character in a match. Like for example, a Star for Mario, a Diamond for Luigi (from Mansion), the Triforce for Link, etc... Once you find it, they appear in the character selection menu on the character's side proving the fact that you mastered that character for example, or something like that. Or they could be the logo of the character, which gets colored once you collect it.

- A "Curriculum Vitae" mode which is basically a diary including every achievement you make in the game. Not only "completed Classic mode" stuff, but also those rare events like the ones depicted in the Bonus Mode in Melee, something like "killed an enemy by suicide dive" and stuff. Unlocking all these achievements will reward you with special honoring names which you can use online. Like: "Your Username - Master Of KOs".

- Coins should be able to make you buy collectibles, ****ing obviously.
