how about a Neutral Smash?

we have UP/DOWN/SIDE and Neutral Specials.
we have UP/DOWN/SIDE and Neutral Aerials.
we have UP/DOWN/ and SIDE smashes ............but no Neutral smash!

what if a "neutral smash" was a new move everyone had?

I know the A-combo kinda sits on the neutral spot, but if there was a way to have a neutral smash, would you want one?
what would be the button combination? is it a good idea? think its just too much work for the developers? is grizby asking too many questions?

I think it'd be interesting concept, and im pretty sure im not the only one who thought of this (and someone might have made this thread before me), So discuss!

I could see that holding A could do a neutral smash where as simply tapping it would keep the jabs.
It would be a little bit awkward for people who are used to holding A for neutral jabs but I'm sure it wouldn't be too terribly difficult to get used to in a timely manner.

I think in order to perform it, you have to press A while you quickly flick the control stick in no direction.

can the wii u pad and pro controller click inwards like an xbox and playstion controllers? if so, you could click inwards and quickly press A for the neutral smash. :p

NO. end of discussion. Just kidding, but, if they added a nuetral smash, how they add it to the 3DS or ALL the controllers on the Wii U would be the hardest part. Also, how would it work? Side smashes are for the side, down smash, usually attacks both sides on the floor, and up smash attacks opponents over you. Not saying it is a bad idea (it could really work), but just saying "where would a neutral smash hit"? Like Ness's yo-yo smash attack hits everywhere (I haven't played Brawl in a long time, so correct me if that isn't a smash attack for him), so if they made a neutral smash attack, would that be it? I think neutral smashes should hit everywhere, but be the weakest smash attack so people don't abuse it. Take metaknights nair for example. That attack hits all around him, so I could see it being a smash attack. It would be like where he does a short hop and spins with his sword attacking all over, which could be related to Sonic's up smash. It would be a cool new move though, so it'd be interesting how they do it.

That sounds like it might be very awkward getting used to. It could work, but I think flicking the control stick in a meta-spatial direction is a better way.

How about this, to perform a neutral smash, you charge up a regular smash by moving the joystick and pressing the a button, then you let go of the joystick and the character switches to charging up its neutral smash. Obviously there are flaws with this but it is just an idea.

I imagine there would be a small hitbox all around the character, or maybe one with a unique direction like southwest and northeast hitboxes, so no one's neutral smash would be Identical.
there are a couple of smashes that have questionable hit box positions, the oddest ones to me are Lucas's, mewtwos, and Zamus's Down smashes, which only affect one side, as opposed to everyone else's D-smash.

Wouldn't they have to? We already have down-smashes though, and most down-smashes are sweepers that cover the front and back of the character, which effectively hit in both directions. Not to mention that Smash attacks have some significant wind-up, with the exception of some sweepers like Fox's in Brawl. What is the real point of having a neutral smash in this case? It might protect you from a certain direction, but it is likely to have too much knockback than an aerial or tilt option if you're going on the offensive and not enough knockback when you want to kill.

good points. especially about down smashes going both sides. BUT they don't protect you from attacks coming from above, but that's obvious.
id also like to add that not all smashes are used for killing. some are used for set-ups, combos, follow-throughs and what-not.
a neutral smash could fit in this criteria pretty well.

That's true, I forgot that not all smashes are the same.

Well, I said that I wanted neutral smashes to be the weakest (not like I would have any control over it), but I didn't say I wanted them to be weak in general.

We all have to get used to new controllers anyway. It's possible we can get a grab2 with our new 2nd shoulder buttons :]

...so something along the lines of Marth's >b? Or maybe just an obvious tilt-age of strong/special attacks depending on the angle of the diagonal? Possibly different aesthetics depending on said tilt-age, but would that linger too far from the traditional style of the series? Sakurai seems to be subtly implementing new mechanics, as seen when MegaMan performs two completely different side steps in his reveal trailer, one leaning forward (new sm4sh) and the other leaning back (melee and brawl style)...it's interesting to think of all the other small differences that WILL be and ARE being implemented whilst in development....cheers* to the future ;D

I'd rather have Air Grabs and Bsmashes and Bspecs and Btilts first. Air Grabs cause we already grab on the ground and attack in the air so why not grab in the air to? xD And Back Smashes and Back Specials because we already have Bairs so we need BSmashes Bspecs and Btilts cause of that now. :L

Sure. I've practiced flicking the control stick into infinity in my spare time, it doesn't take that long to master.

That sounds like a good idea, but if we grabbed in the air, I think we wouldn't be able choose what direction to throw. If we were able to, that might make chain grabbing easier (throw up in the air, grab in the air, throw down towards the ground, repeat). Also, it might depend on the hitstun too.

Air grabs would be awesome, but tough to use because you'd be falling during the throw.
I'm really hoping that the devs take advantage of the new analogue stick buttons by introducing some new mechanic.
Or how about the fact that we now have an extra trigger. Two grabs? Maybe two shields?

Or maybe even a tripping attack that could set up combos.

Maybe it'll be like one of those bop-it machines and to do a neutral smash, you have to pull the control stick outwards.

I'd actually prefer your way, and I hope the control stick buttons are used in smash. The bop-it thing was a joke. Imagine how awful it would be to have to pull the control stick out to attack!

hahah, I know right?

thinking of bop-it kinda makes me desire a "bop-it" mode in smash 4 now.

But, wouldn't the press the stick inwards thing be hard to do on most controls or even the 3DS

The Classic Controller can't do it.

I'm not really sold on the idea since most D-Smashes cover everything around you, so I'm not sure what a N-Smash would do that'd be unique.

With the 3DS circle pade you are unable to click inwards. Same goes for the regular CC and CCP. Though I believe the Wii-U CCP does allow you to clikc inwardly. But yea pretty much the idea of clicking on the control stick to do a Neutral Smash is pretty impracticle due to most of the Nintendo Controllers lacking the option to click inwardly with a control stick. And 3DS can't do it either. :/

How about Back Smashes, Back Specials and Back Tilts, I think that might be a bit easier to perform and would bring new attacks to the formula!

Also I don't want the Stick button to be used for anything currently as I myself am planning on a controller setup that utilizes these control stick buttons (pressing the control stick) in order to be able to have a setup where you don't have to move any finger ever (seriously). It will not only be the most covenient gameplay ever but it will also be the most comfortable and the fastest one in terms of input. I am already looking foward to the Wii U Pro controller :D.

I can see back smashes and back specials (though those would get in the way of b revervals, which are pretty much confirmed already), but back tilts ...how would you.. do that?

Well I guess the character would turn around and just do a F-Tilt. Unless you did it in the way Brawl introduced where Direction + C-Stick = Tilt, then it would be simple, but only controller inputs with 2 sticks would be able to do it, so I guess Back Tilts wouldn't work that well.

How about we only have one attack for the next game. It will be less complicated. :troll:
