The Hori Mini Pads are now selling for over 70 bucks! Are these things really worth it?

Wouldn’t these on a standard Nintendo 64 controller work just as well?

Hey I’m a pretty hardcore video game and peripheral collector but even I have a hard time justifying 75 bucks for an N64 pad. I know there’s already another thread devoted to these controller but it’s gotten WAY to long to be useful. Would somebody mind giving a short review or their impression of the Hori Mini Pad here?

The point isn't to get a better grip on the stick. The point is that the stick doesn't wear out like a normal n64 stick.

75 is pretty expensive

i payed 60 for each of mine

the stick is the main reason to get one but not the only one. i like the size and shape a lot more, it feels as if it's easier to navigate the buttons even though the layout is the same. Also, the fact that there are two z buttons behind the L and R feels nicer to me. esp in smash when you can short hop, do an aerial with r and cancel with the z button right behind it. This might seem like a silly difference but I definitely find it useful. Anyway i have three but i probably wouldn't pay 70. that's a little ridiculous.

btw, the device you linked won't make your stick last longer, it'll just make it more comfortable on the thumb.

Do the Hori Pads have the same general build quality as the official Nintendo controllers? I ask because most third party peripherals are usually garbage.

Also, the analog stick looks similar to the one on the GameCube pad. Does it perform the same? If so that’s pretty nice because the GameCube pad is one of my favorites in all of gaming although I’ve yet to use one with the original Super Smash Bros. since I haven’t downloaded the Virtual Console version yet.

^ yes the stick is really similar to the gamecube but it almost seems a little more springy than the gamecube stick but other than that it is basically identical.

as far as the quality, it's just as good as a 1st party n64 controller. That's probably why hori mini pads are the only third party n64 controller to be officially licensed by nintendo.

Thanks Hamburglar! Are people generally buying these controllers to use or as collectables? I noticed that the ad says they’re rare. At 70 bucks I’d probably be afraid to use it.

I’m tempted to get one but they’re just soooo expensive! I’m torn, if I don’t get it I’ll probably hate my self but if I do get it my lady will hate me.
