I don't see why this would be a bad idea in any way, if someone doesn't like an online mode, then they don't have to use it.

I like the idea, but it might cause some problems, as it can create teams of 2 friends vs 2 strangers, thus giving one a communicative advantage.

They could just only match you against another pair that are playing together.

In the Wii U version if your playing with friends, you can customize the rule-set as you please. I'd only assume the same for the 3DS. If your talking about you and your friend being queued together in random match, then I don't know. But I agree that it would be fun!

It could be pretty cool, however I've never had much fun playing doubles in the past. If they could revise the ruleset to make it more interesting (no ideas there) I'd be down.

Was coming in to say this. They've already shown there will be team battles so I would say that the option for two friends to link together and play against other people online is already implemented.

He said it's a great mode to play with your friends, so why would he not make it go online?

No, the smash direct. Didn't we see the 3DS version's online modes anyway? All I saw was Fun and Glory, with FFA and team options within Fun.

I like the idea. I've played a game on my PS3 where they did have this. And from my experience, this would be lovely to have. I rather pair up with someone I know and is good rather than someone who I don't know, possibly goof off, and just sucks.I ALWAYS win when I used that mode, then again, me and my buddy were one of the best players and still at the top 100 players according to leaderboards. But enough about that, if they added this, I will sure use it.

I also have to agree with this idea. While I do like seeing how well I do with pairing up with a random person, I almost never played team battle in Brawl due to the way the teams may become horribly unbalanced in terms of which players play with who, so something like this would surely make me consider playing team battles more often in Smash 4.

Can't see them having this in the 3DS version, because you have to connect the two 3DS's as well as Wi-fi.
Wii U version sounds much more likely as it's been done in Mario Kart for two gens in a row now on console.
The Smash trailer is also not a good reason because it only shows the 'With Anyone' mode of Online play, also the betting on players mode is not shown in the With Anyone mode either(but the mode itself is shown in the trailer), so there is probably a menu screen even before that one, but I'm gonna bet on Smash Run only being available to friends possibly.

As for Smash Run Online, the only thing he said was 'Ultimately it's way different than a simple online match'. Nothing about it being local only. This heavily implies that Smash Run will likely be playable online with friends and there's no reason for it not to be.
