You and a friend can pair up to go do doubles online, just like Mario Kart 7.
Does anyone else think this is a good idea?

They could just only match you against another pair that are playing together.I like the idea, but it might cause some problems, as it can create teams of 2 friends vs 2 strangers, thus giving one a communicative advantage.
Was coming in to say this. They've already shown there will be team battles so I would say that the option for two friends to link together and play against other people online is already implemented. There is actually a Team Battle option in the online menu, it was shown during the Digital event. So there very well could be such an option.
This is so obviously gonna happenAll i want is Smash Run Online.
Pretty sure he said it's local only. This is so obviously gonna happen
He said it's a great mode to play with your friends, so why would he not make it go online?
Well, I'm gonna need a direct quote / video of him saying thatPretty sure he said it's local only.

On the site it doesn't say anything specifically about thatPretty sure he says it during the Smash Run portion of the direct.
The beginning of the Smash Run portion, I believe. On the site it doesn't say anything specifically about that
And I probably missed that part... It was at beginning, right?
You're talking about the E3 direct, right? Did I miss one or something? Because I couldn't find it in the video I watched :SThe beginning of the Smash Run portion, I believe.
No, the smash direct. Didn't we see the 3DS version's online modes anyway? All I saw was Fun and Glory, with FFA and team options within Fun.You're talking about the E3 direct, right? Did I miss one or something? Because I couldn't find it in the video I watched :S
Link? So confused rn :SNo, the smash direct. Didn't we see the 3DS version's online modes anyway? All I saw was Fun and Glory, with FFA and team options within Fun.
As for Smash Run Online, the only thing he said was 'Ultimately it's way different than a simple online match'. Nothing about it being local only. This heavily implies that Smash Run will likely be playable online with friends and there's no reason for it not to be.The Smash direct. The Smash Run portion begins at 31:12.
This is the 3DS version features trailer. We see the online modes and the lack of a Smash Run option in the later half, I believe.
I can already see the Wii U having the feature. I do hope on seeing it!Can't see them having this in the 3DS version, because you have to connect the two 3DS's as well as Wi-fi.
Wii U version sounds much more likely as it's been done in Mario Kart for two gens in a row now on console.

The Smash trailer is also not a good reason because it only shows the 'With Anyone' mode of Online play, also the betting on players mode is not shown in the With Anyone mode either(but the mode itself is shown in the trailer), so there is probably a menu screen even before that one, but I'm gonna bet on Smash Run only being available to friends possibly.
