The homing attacks works best for "gimping" or taking away the chance for your opponent to recover back to the stage. When he/she is off the stage, trying to get back on, run off the stage, position yourself just below them and use the homing attack. Be careful when to use it though. If they're trying to recover from far beneath the stage, the homing attack will make you suicide. Knowing when and when not to use it is key, and you can also mix in variety with the homing attack in your defense stradegy.

Also, the homing attack and be used to stop your momentum when someone sends you flying off the stage.

It comes in slow and fast varieties, the speed being how long you stay in that charging position. You can make it charge in less time by spamming B. It's good for mixing up rhythms. Opponents will usually see it as "another spinning move" but it's initial lack of movement and then homing properties make it a really good way to disturb a predictable pattern.

Also good for adding into your recovery repetoire as shown by a CPU 9 Sonic. And also good for stalling underneath a platformed stage.
