With the recent interview, Sakurai has confirmed that the reason Ice Climbers were cut was because even though they were in and working fine on the Wii U version, the 3DS version couldn't handle them and thus were cut from both.
This is exactly what I was worried of when when he said the rosters would be the same; the Wii U version being held back so the 3DS version can keep up. Having this feeling confirmed makes me not want the 3DS version to exist, because then the Wii U version could go all out with no limitation and quite possibly be the best Smash yet. Or at the very least have differences in the roster. Hell, this might be the reason we got so many filler (clone is a little too generous) characters is because that's what the 3DS could manage so that's what they went with.
These are just my thoughts. Maybe later down the line "Ultra" Super Smash Bros. will be announced for the U as the definitive edition without anything to hold back from. But maybe not...
