Okay, if you use a regular uncharged dsmash hitting behind you with the middle of the yo-yo, its supposed to hit them lightly then up with good knockback right?

Well... not really. That's what's supposed to happen.

Lemme explain. It works this way on SOME characters, but not others.

Try using an uncharged dsmash on a Mario. BOTH hits connect, the desired effect.
But try it on a Dedede. Does it work this way? NO! The weak hit connects and the opponents pops in front if you. If you wanna hit them again, you must charge it a bit before you release to hit them as they fall in front of you.

Now after a little testing, these characters give the following results.

O-Both hits connect
X-Weak hit only connects

Mario-O
DK-O
Metaknight-O
Fox-O
Falco-O
Ike-O
Snake-O
Charizard-O
Yoshi-O
Bowser-X
Dedede-X
Wolf-X
Link-X
Ganondorf-X

Now, I'm baffled. Why does it work well on some characters but not others? I looked into this and checked out some of the similarities of the people marked X.

They are all heavy, but Charizard and Snake were marked O.
They arent all huge characters. Link and Wolf aint giants.
They arent all powerful. Wolf isnt a powerhouse, and even if he was Ike is and he's not marked X
They arent all human shaped. Wolf, Link, and Ganon are, but the evil kings are not. If it DID have something to do with this, why isnt Ike an X?

So why does this happen? Any idea of why this happens?
My only theory is fall speed, but I dunno much about that.

If anyone wants to help me complete the chart, that's be great for helping answer this question.

BTW, this doesnt mean the dsmash is hopeless for these opponents. A little charge will usually make both hits connect, especially on Wolf who falls so fast and Dedede and Bowser who are huge targets. Also, it seems hitting with the edge farthest from Ness when uncharged makes the strong hitbox hit only. Wierd.

Well I don't think this helps much, but its some info. If Ness is back to back with Marth or Ike(Not to sure about Ike) and they counter his Dsmash while its starting. They'll still be damaged because of the small hitbox of the yo-yo returning.

Dedede isn't an evil King. He's mostly harmless.
Then again, he's form the Kirby universe. How evil can one be...

Metaknight isn't evil, though. That's for sure. Just a regular "Joe anti-hero".

There's too possibility. either you can do it on anyone but you weren't able to space it all the same. Either its the combination of weight, falling speed and air control, if so, Wario should be a victim of the weak hit.

Its not spacing. When I dsmash a Wolf, only ONE hit connects. Its either the weak or the strong, but mostly the weak. It only hits strong with the very back of the yo-yo.

And I just tested Wario. He's an O meaning he takes both hits. Wierd.

So... I guess no one wants to help me test.

The hitstun animation is idiosyncratic to each character. It's the same heterogeneity with following up a Flame Choke - no reason why it doesn't work to combo a jab on some people, they were just made to hit the ground that way.

So some characters have parts of their body in the right place after a 'weak hit', others do not. You just gotta learn it.

And be mindful of the fact that this is a dimension along which the game developers can control game balance sensibly. Recall the characters who could instantly Bair a Mewtwo Confusion?

It's like that.
