I really hate to say this but smash 4 seems to be all about punishing your opponent almost up to the point of who makes the first move so you can grab them. It feels like u have to punish and baby sit most of the game. They tried making it to friendly up to the point where the best offense is a stall defence. It almost annoys me how defensive this game is.

Then there are the characters who can take advantage of defensive playstyle like:4duckhunt:,:4littlemac:,:4yoshi:,:4zss: and :rosalina:. There are a few others I'm sure but this game feels like it's all about stall and not offense.

So what's your guys take on the competitive seen?

dodge rolls could stand to be nerfed a little bit, most projectile fighters I face, like Megaman, use rolls to make some distance, and it's kind of tough to catch them without predicting what makes them roll and what prompts them to attack

I don't think it is that bad honestly. Brawl was super defensive...this game on the otherhand feels like it rewards (smart) offense and defense equally. Punishing rolls was difficult at first, but I've gotten used to the idea. The players that beat me more so than the others do not roll without rhyme or reason.

So basically, I disagree with what you are saying.

Everyone agrees or they're in denial. The game rewards defensive play too much

This. I literally faced a Mega man yesterday who didn't walk or run once, he moved by rolling-literally side to side. He even would roll towards me to get to the other side of the stage. I would like to say I am a fairly accomplished player but I still found it really difficult to punish his rolls even when I knew where he was rolling to next. They just blend into eachother and are so fast. All in all tho the rolls I do manage to punish add up and it is pretty hard to come out on top with such a playstyle.

It rewards smart play, whether that be measured aggression or careful defence. There's a reason why, in the real world, good fighting practises are keeping your guard up, ducking, dodging and counter-attacking; approaching aggressively without carefully measuring what you do will leave you open and punishable. It makes sense that being patient and doing what you can to create openings for yourself to go on the offensive, rather than just playing offensively and expecting it to work, is the optimal way to play in Smash 4.

I love Smash 4's meta. It's perfectly okay that it doesn't suit everyone, but I find it incredibly fun to both watch and play. :)

I think it rewards on both sides of the extremes. It rewards smart defensive play where you pick your points of attack very carefully, but it also rewards the hyper offensive players. You can easily catch people in some ridiculous combos for early stocks if you play aggressive and dominate, but on the flip side you can just kind of wait it out and chip away. I like it that way

I used to play similarly with my Falcon, but now I incorporate a lot of offensive setups to my opponents that are safe and easy to trick defensive players. You have to find the things that work offensively with your character. A well spaced late nair into jab combo with Falcon seems to beat out a lot of my opponents who try to shield grab as an example. If both players played defensively then nothing would essentially happen right? Learning how to play both and play them smart will set you apart from the others.

It is easier to play defensive and counter-attack in this game than it is to play aggressively smart, so it makes it seem like defensive strategies might be the only way to go. I do agree this game is all about punishing a lot of the time, but you can punish on both the offensive and defensive side.
