hi res textures - an explanation

i noticed a couple of texture threads and decided to post this

trying to play smash with hi res textures lags for 1 reason only:

all emulators allocate a certain amount of RAM

all emulators for the most part try to emulate the original n64 hardware so the emulators will allocate about 8MB of RAM and when you try to run hi res textures, it lags because of this 8MB limitation.

no emulator no matter what new plugin you have will fully run with hi res textures unless a emulator is modified to expect hi res textures so that it can allocate more memory.

i know firsthand because years ago i was into OoT hacking with some pretty ancient emulators.

a couple of people reported that on some stages it doesn't lag and i'm pretty sure it's the same situation for you. if not, feel free to share your secret so that other people can enjoy lag-free hi res texture games.

what i meant about the knowing first hand thing is that i came upon this limitation at that time

glide is just great, and if only they would nullify the backspace hotkey from changing the render, it would be amazing.
maybe i will check if they released the source code and change it myself later.

Ummm.....only the hacked Jabo3d8 1.7 lags. There's a list I found on the internet one day that showed which games spiked lag. Hires textures works fine on glide plugin unless your computer is **** or your recording with fraps. Fraps don't seem to like texture hacks even on a computer far off project 64 requirements. Other than that texture hacks works fine, just don't use Jabo3d8 1.7 because it lags on ssb64 and wasn't meant to be on anything but project64 1.7. The reason we wanna use Jabo3d8 1.7 is because there are more texture packs for ssb64 on Jabo3d8 1.7 and it takes a while to convert it "manually" for glide since there's no automatic program to do it for you.

EDIT: Off Topic Anyone knows where I can find Project64k Plus (Not the one Near's making)
