Hi, Smashboards, I came to this website as I was told that someone could mentor me and I do want to get good enough at smash brothers that I can go to tournaments and win some money (I know it's super hard to be good at smash to make a living, but at this point if I could win so much as $30 per month I would be so much happier) as I need it due to time restraints via IRL stuff taking up too much time and energy and stress.

I have a few questions about smash brothers competitively:
1: Are most non black backgrounded/floored (ie no omega form pac-maze as that makes it nearly impossible to see Greninja's side B) omega stages the standard?
2: I HIGHLY doubt this is a discovery, but is it common knowledge that Sheik's down B and ZSS's down B's direction can be set to flip in the opposite direction you're facing if you do something with holding down and said opposite direction right before hitting down B, right?
3: Does the extremely short flash of lightening that comes off of ZSS's down smash do anything extra? I have pictures of it that I took with my 3ds that I can copy over via a picture on my ipod in case you need clarification.
4: Why are stages that are not just certain Omega forms used in competitive smash for 3ds/Wii U?
5: Are there match up charts for each character vs other character? Ie :4zss: Vs :4diddy: I tried looking on the forums but I couldn't seem to find them at all.
6: Is :4ryu: that good that I should pay the 8$ for him to use him competitively? He's low on this website's useage statistics, though I don't know if that's because he's DLC or if he's just not that good. I have the same question about the mii fighters.
7: Is there a guide on how to use each character well that's better than 5 minute youtube videos that show combos my skill laugh at because they know that replicating that is like trying to recreate the level of detail they put in Avatar with a box of 16 crayons? YES I AM THAT BAD.
8: What's the deal with Yoshi being so good? I cannot for the life of me use them, however whenever I face one in For Glory I might as well be playing against the current top ranked player in the North Eastern US, whoever that is.
9: Is there a proper place to beg for help ask to be mentored on the characters that I have negative skill (negative skill is where you emitt so much fail at something you could do better at it if you punched your face so hard you fainted and the act of your face falling on the controller would result in better button combinations than you could EVER pull off currently) at, like :4ness::4diddy::4sonic:(sonic is easy to use???):4luigi::4mario::4zelda::4tlink::4sheik::rosalina::4falco::4fox::4villagerf:?
10: Please, for the love of Glob tell me that small online SSB4 3DS tournaments are the norm, because I cannot drive around that much in my state (nothing beyond 45 minutes) and that normal smash tournaments are worth the drive, because the last thing I was into competitively (The Pokemon TCG) just killed me because I had to get a new car and can't afford all of the traveling and $50 each new set that it costs me every 3 months. Let's just say I died a lot inside when I had to give up Pokemon competitively.
11:Also, please tell me that in the event that most Sm4ash tournaments are for the Wii U it's easy to adapt to the game cube/game cube replication controller as I can't afford a Wii U probably for the next 2 years. ):

I will try to answer some of your questions...

6: Is :4ryu: that good that I should pay the 8$ for him to use him competitively? He's low on this website's useage statistics, though I don't know if that's because he's DLC or if he's just not that good. I have the same question about the mii fighters.
Ryu is a good character but the meta game of Smash 4 is still be developed but Zero said that he is good but it mostly your own personal experience that matters...

Also the mii fighters are OK. The brawler is best one.

7: Is there a guide on how to use each character well that's better than 5 minute youtube videos that show combos my skill laugh at because they know that replicating that is like trying to recreate the level of detail they put in Avatar with a box of 16 crayons? YES I AM THAT BAD.
The ZSS boards may have guides that will help you. You could also ask questions.

8: What's the deal with Yoshi being so good? I cannot for the life of me use them, however whenever I face one in For Glory I might as well be playing against the current top ranked player in the North Eastern US, whoever that is.
According to Zero...

Yoshi is the LAST tournament viable character and he does struggle from some match ups but Yoshi has a good recovery, good rage?, Good combos, Good perfect pivoting, Good Up-Tilt, Throw setups, etc.

Umm who's Zero? I'm a TOTAL noob when it comes to these things, sorry. Also what did he mean by "LAST tournament viable character" does that mean he's the worst or he's just all around decent? Also I take it because I want to learn how to play Shiek I should go to their boards? (I use they as a gender neutral pronoun because if you think about it Zelda/Shiek could be gender fluid, some days they're a guy, Shiek, some days they're a girl, Zelda. Am I crazy for reading this much into it or does this make sense?)

Can someone please explain these terms I don't understand that were used in a good Shiek guide I read here?
RAR
B-reverse
stsrtup
One from a thread on what would happen if 3ds smash was never updated. " Diddy kong's Hoohah" I, I know that games and communities for things have accronyms for things, but that HAS to be the most WTF-inducing one I have EVER heard. O_O

Sure, I think I can cover all 3 of these pretty easily but by all means let me know if I'm unclear.
RAR stands for reverse aerial rush. Essentially what it means is that when you're running in one direction, then push the analog(grey) stick in the opposite direction as you jump, then you will retain some momentum forwards while turning around in midair. The main purpose of RAR is to run towards someone and back air them.
B-Reversing is when you use any special move and then flick the analog stick in the opposite direction. This will turn you around, and thus the special move will be performed as if you'd originally been facing that way. This is not only good for attack-based moves, but also for any time where you want to turn around in the air because any b-reversed move will do that while normally you can't turn around unless you're on the ground.
Startup(i assume that's what you meant and just had a typo) is just how long it takes for any move to actually come out after you input it on the controller. So a really fast move like a jab might come out on frame 1 or 2, which is nearly instantly after you've hit A, while something like Bowser's F-Smash will take a lot longer to actually come out after you've hit the buttons.

Ok, last few questions before I fall asleep HARD.
What would be the proper place to start a thread on what would happen if Shiek lost their very slight jump before they teleport via up B? Like is that extra bit of movement important enough that they would become nearly unviable recovery wise?
Where IS the proper place to ask for a mentor for multiple characters and the game in general? Do I just create 1 thread in like 5 different character's general discussion pages or what?

Welcome to the boards!
Now, let's see what I can answer...

1: Are most non black backgrounded/floored (ie no omega form pac-maze as that makes it nearly impossible to see Greninja's side B) omega stages the standard?
Omega stages where moves like Shadow Sneak cannot be seen are typically banned/never chosen, due to giving the user an unfair advantage.

2: I HIGHLY doubt this is a discovery, but is it common knowledge that Sheik's down B and ZSS's down B's direction can be set to flip in the opposite direction you're facing if you do something with holding down and said opposite direction right before hitting down B, right?
Very common indeed, it also applies to up-B which is very important in making a successful recovery.

3: Does the extremely short flash of lightening that comes off of ZSS's down smash do anything extra? I have pictures of it that I took with my 3ds that I can copy over via a picture on my ipod in case you need clarification.
The initial flash causes the opponent to become stunned, the lingering/more distant flash causes a weaker stun.

4: Why are stages that are not just certain Omega forms used in competitive smash for 3ds/Wii U?
Stages with platforms (e.g. Battlefield, Smashville) are usually considered more balanced than Final Destination or Omegas. Some characters (such as Little Mac) thrive on FD, so it's important to give other characters the chance to counter them effectively.

5: Are there match up charts for each character vs other character? Ie :4zss: Vs :4diddy: I tried looking on the forums but I couldn't seem to find them at all.
Most boards are currently still in the discussion stages, and consider it far too early to put out actual matchup scores. The best you'll do is to find those discussion threads and see what they say about those matchups.

6: Is :4ryu: that good that I should pay the 8$ for him to use him competitively? He's low on this website's useage statistics, though I don't know if that's because he's DLC or if he's just not that good. I have the same question about the mii fighters.
Ryu is considered very strong actually. The reason he's still uncommon is because of the high level of effort and extreme technical depth he possesses in comparison to other characters - if you want to play Ryu effectively, he will almost certainly be the only character you main (with maybe a less practiced secondary to cover his weak matchups).

7: Is there a guide on how to use each character well that's better than 5 minute youtube videos that show combos my skill laugh at because they know that replicating that is like trying to recreate the level of detail they put in Avatar with a box of 16 crayons? YES I AM THAT BAD.
Check the guides section, they have some good, easy to read stuff in there. You can search by character and by game to easily find relevant info.

Perhaps try those characters' social threads and ask for practice against those characters.

Sadly 3DS tournaments are uncommon these days, but if you check out the Online Tournament Listings you might get lucky.

11:Also, please tell me that in the event that most Sm4ash tournaments are for the Wii U it's easy to adapt to the game cube/game cube replication controller as I can't afford a Wii U probably for the next 2 years. ):
If it's an offline tournament, it's almost certainly on Wii U. Some places will allow you to use a 3DS, but those are the exception rather than the rule. You may need a few warm-up games over the days before the tournament to adjust to the GC pad, but it's usually not too hard to adjust. You can also use the Wii U Pro Controller in lots of venues, which is very easy to adjust to from the 3DS.

I hope this helps you even a little. :)

This helped me so much, I wish I could give it 5 likes! :D I also take it that the reason shadow sneak is harder to see on Omega stages is because it's harder to notice a thin black sliver going across the stage? And OHHH that would explain the shorter stun time on ZSS's down smash. But in responce to that I have another question, is the direction of the short lightening flash random and do the different angles mean it has different hit boxes, thus resulting in some rare cases where the opponent being short stunned is a roll of the dice? As for Ryu I take it that means he's a highly technical character to the point where I would basically have to be an extremely good player to even be semi-good at him? Also thank you for letting me know about the Pro/Game Cuber controller, I was really worried that because I don't have a Wii U/working copy of Melee and Game Cuber controller I would be screwed if I were to play in a tournament.

The hitbox closest to ZSS stuns for longer, the hitbox furthest from her stuns for less time, that's all there is to it as far as I know.

As for Ryu I take it that means he's a highly technical character to the point where I would basically have to be an extremely good player to even be semi-good at him?
If you commit time to learning him, you'll inevitably improve as a player as you go along. It's just that, to play Ryu effectively, you'd need to focus on him almost exclusively - his technical depth doesn't leave much room for other characters.

Let me tell you about JTails. I got into Link on Thursday and only watched his Link competitive guide video, and he is very helpful, and I've ended up becoming quite good with Link in a matter of a couple of days. Just look up "ssb4 (character) guide Jtails" on Youtube and there you go.

Thank you for the reccomendation I'll look at his videos. Also I know I'm going to make some uber sm4sh geek ragey about this, but can someone tell me why Mario is that much better than DR Mario is the difference in down B that important?
And can someone also tell me if Lucario is really THAT bad that he's only used as a secondary character on most people's tournament runs?
Edit: I heard that crouching can reduce damage by a bit if you can't shield, is this true?

Mario's down air is like Doc's down b, except quicker, and you can't raise yourself. Mario is a bit weaker but has a better recovery and more edgeguarding options with F.L.U.D.D and can make it back on stage easier, even his jumps are higher than docs. I'm not sure about Lucario but with out being damaged himself he doesn't deal much damage. some of his attacks are slow such as his side special and if you miss the ledge with up special and land on the ground you are easily punishable. Crouching doesn't reduce damage but reduces knockback, but not crouch walking. It's basically useless as you'll just shield of dodge instead.

Empoleon_master Empoleon_master wanna 1v1 if you've got 3DS?
