Hi I go by the name Piggy. I'm trying to get better with Marth. I was recently influenced to play Smash because of the documentary and I decided to go with Project M for online play! Its really fun but the frustration from getting my ass handed to me is pretty bad...

My first question is, how can you forward air twice in the air as Marth in one short hop? I only can do it half the time

Hello! Although this isn't an answer to your question there is a character specific subforum just for you. smashboards.com/forums/marth.346/ . It has frame data and general discussion that'll be helpful to you. Best of luck!

I think your questions answers itself. If you can do it half the time, then you know how. Just keep practicing it to get more consistent. There's unfortunately no magic trick, although you're free to experiment with alternative control schemes.
Someone draw this man a picture of marth with flies around him.
I don't get it.

@ Riceykins Riceykins thanks man :) i'll look at it right now!

@ shairn shairn Let me rephrase myself. My character does it half the time. I honestly have no clue why its happening at all. Not sure if i'm jumping too low, or not atacking fast enough. stuff like that.

Jumps have two set heights: Short hop and Full hop. There is no inbetween. It's perfectly possible to short hump double fair with Marth, and it's actually easier than in Melee. If your short hop double fair isn't coming out right, it's because you didn't start your first fair early enough. Ideally you'll do it the very first frame you get airborne, but it's not necessary to do a SHDfair that's actually useful.

Marth's Short hop lasts for 38 frames (At least, in Melee; Since Marth is practically the same in PM let's assume this is still the case) and Fair has its first active hitboxes on frame 4, with First Actionable Frame at 29. This means that the latest you can start your first fair and still get a hitbox out of the second is 38 - (29+4) = frame 5, or one twelfth of a second after jumping. This doesn't sound like a lot, but since the buttons are so close together and it's a pretty mindless input it shouldn't be difficult to pull it off. A five frame window is pretty large, to be honest.

@ shairn shairn AKA practice. got it! will probably do some training.

but it's not necessary to do a SHDfair that's actually useful.
I played online against this guy and he was SHDfair'ing me to death and then ken combos. Is it not very effective on a better player?

I think you misunderstood what I meant. It's not that SHDfair isn't useful, quite the contrary. It's one of Marth's best tools. What I meant is that you don't have to be frame perfect and start your first fair on frame 1 and your second fair on frame 29, there's some leeway in the timings for both. SHDFair started on frames 3 and 34 are still useful, for example.

@ Saito Saito I am using the Y button to jump mainly. I have turned off tap jumping on the control settings.
I do see alot of people using X. Will that change how fast I can SHDfair?

No, not if you're already using a button to jump.

I'd just say keep practicing it and good luck friend.
