i have just started playing SSBM and i am currently trying to unlock all the characters and stages. online i read that you can unlock mewto by playing either 700 Vs. matches or 20 hours of compined Vs. play time, but i have completed both of those. any idea as to why i cant unlock him?

Um, are you sure you've done those? Double check by going (from the title screen) Data -> Melee Records -> Misc. Records
If you have indeed done either, he should just come up as a new challenger after your next VS. Match. Then all you have to do is beat the cpu mewtwo...

yeah srry for the late reply, mewtwo is bottom tier and sucks so dont even bother unlocking him if you want to win

Easy effortless trick to unlock Mewtwo:
Plug in 4 controllers
Turn off items
Play 1 stock on Hyrule temple or any stage without hazards
Wait 5 hours
End the game (by KOing the other characters)
Battle Mewtwo to unlock him
Plug in 4 controllers
