Okay I don't want to sound like a noob but I need some help. Could anyone tell me what z canceling and short hopping are?

Look in the stickies, they supply the definitions.
Anyways, Z canceling cancels out all the lag in aerial moves. To do it, you press Z (or R) right before hitting the ground during an aerial move
Short hopping is... well... short hopping. Its a shorter jump.
