Help with some Luigi tech

I've been grinding through some vods trying to figure out how to not be a garbage can and I noticed a tech where he goes further off a platform than if he would wavedash off. Can someone explain how this works for me?

It's pretty simple actually. You just have to drop through the platform after wave-landing. Also the length of the platform can make it more difficult, Smashville being the easiest and PS2 being the most difficult as far as tournament leagal stages go.
