I have been trying to learn how to pillar effectively recently, but I'm running into an issue. As of right now I am just working on pillaring Falcon on Final D.

My problem is, is that after about 40%, Falcon techs when he hits the ground before I can shine him again. I must not be fast enough, i dont know. But, this causes me not able to get a reliable follow up if he decides to tech right or left. Do I need to just hit dair later, and fastfall sooner to catch up? Do I need to just make a hard read on the tech? Or, do I need to waveshine to dair after a certain percent, instead of just jumping straight out of the shine (dont know how that would help me on anything other than DI reads)?

I have no clue how pillaring works, other than downb -> full hop -> dair -> repeat, so any help is much appreciated!

Pillaring only works up to a certain percentage usually about 40% give or take depending on the fast faller due increased knockback, if you feel like that's the problem you can try to be more creative. On some situations after a waveshine you can hit them with light nair/bair to up tilt to strong bair ect. Follow ups imo are more easier after this cap on stages like YS BF DL64 FoD because you can always shine waveland onto platforms. Either that or set something up that you can follow up on. For example if the opponent is DIing towards off the stage try to combo as much as you can and try to dair them to the bottom blast zone. If opponent is DIing anywhere towards the center try to set up a laser reset and charge a forward smash

I also forgot try to get used to waveshining instead of full hopping out of your shines it adds more mobility for tech chasing

Thank you, this is very helpful. So, how does waveshining help with tech chasing? Im not trying to argue or anything, I honestly know nothing about pillaring.

Whoops I didn't mean to type tech chasing force of habit I meant to say chasing them while their airborne. If you shine somone and they are DIing away a full hop won't give you the neccessary horizontal movement but by waveshining your able to run right after and you can always shffl your dairs and follow with another shine and pillar that way

Alright man, this was super helpful. Last question; is it possible for midfallers-fastfallers to DI away at early percents from a shine->fullhop dair so that I miss the dair? Basically, is it necessary to waveshine on characters like falcon at sub 40%, or can I just do a fullhop for a guaranteed dair?

Its better to waveshine than full hopping and yeah they can escape your combo if they DI away.
