Help with grabbing with Z

Sometimes when I grab with Z, I block before grabbing, and this can get frustrating when I want to grab someone but I end up blocking first and followed by getting attacked. How do I fix this?

thats normal. you tend to get that alot if you use the z button for grabs. try a different set up for grabs

Unfortunately... smash's grab button actually tells the game to shield and attack simultaneously. There is no real grab input. I switched my grab button to x hoping it would do something, but to no avail.

You have to learn to be very wary of your shielding and attack inputs prior to wanting to grab. Also, practice grabbing by shielding and pressing A. There is a slim chance that once it is natural to you, you can get a successful shield grab after the game stupidly decides to shield rather than grab.

I really wish I could say more to help, but this is a permanent issue with Smash's design. Buttons labelled as one action shouldn't misbehave like this.

More specifically, holding shield during an action will cause you to shield on the first possible frame - the game buffers the input, and applies it when it can. Attacking doesn't buffer, so pressing Z at the the wrong moment will only cause the shield input to go through.

Alright, I'll just do Shield + A really fast to substitute this issue. Thanks for the replies.
