I'm taking a documentary writing course which requires me to plan and budget a documentary.
My chosen topic is the Smash tournament scene; I have a talented friend about to enter into it.

One of the important parts of planning and even budget is getting an idea of who you'll interview and the general flow of topics being discussed. My chosen theme will be obsession with winning and the competitive versus fun factor amongst players.

So what I'd like you cool guys (and girls?) to do is give me an idea of what the tournament scene is like, some funny/cool anecdotes or characters you've met or heard about and if you feel inclined, talk about your views on the intensity of competition.

Thanks in advance. I'm all ears!

melee has way more than any other smash game. WAY more.
We'll use Melee since you guys have more experience with it.

I'm about to make a pitch to my professor and I'd like to give him a good description of what goes on. Documentary professors want to hear about human drama or interesting people when they hear a pitch. So, if you guys would be so kind, provide some of these things.
!. Is there a conflict between people who are too serious or rely to heavily on rule restrictions and others who like more weapons and stages?

2. Generally, do you have any cool stories or memorable people from tournaments. What would seem strange to an outsider?

I really appreciate it guys. I didn't think I was going to get any response!

Montages of more recent tournaments.

Montages of old school tournaments. This should provide some anecdotes.

EDIT: **** youtube. The audio is gone from some of the videos.

There's this one time at SPOC 6, where M2K and Jman are playing a friendly. Like 30 secs into the match Jman grabs M2K, then M2K somehow does that instant grab release glitch and SDs. Jman drops his controller, runs away, starts hopping around, and then runs back to M2K to tell him he got *****.

And at this smash fest, everyone is busy playing Melee, since I have action replay I activate a code that makes Falcon's Falcon Punch come out and end instantly behind their backs, when Eggm is done playing a match I challenge him and at the very start of the match I start spamming Falcon punch, then like 30 secs into the match I pause the game, and then start laughing so hard I was in tears and my stomach hurt.

A documentary project! Cool! I usually take the journalistic view of gaming scenes - you can read a recent article I wrote here and I'm about to write another one about a tournament I went to this past weekend. I think honestly if you want to get good anecdotes you should talk to the smashers one on one on aim. If you like, PM me and I'll find you people to talk to.
