Help me settle on a main that will teach me better fundamentals :-$

So I've been playing Ultimate since February with pretty much no competitive experience in my whole life and picked up :ultpokemontrainer: as my main since he struck me as the most fun to play + having 3 characters meshed into 1 helped a lot with my characters crisis. I know PT is not the most straight forward character to pick up but I have his basic toolkit in my head by now.
I've always thought :ultpokemontrainer: has some crappy MUs so while looking for a secondary I decided to play :ultrichter: (cheese factor) and :ultjoker: (save for rats, covers bad MUs and heavy zoners), I enjoy these 3 characters a lot, but I feel my skills would improve much faster if I just stuck to one.

However, I feel like using :ultpokemontrainer: has kept me from finding my play style since he relies on so much variation, cheese and explosive options. At first :ultivysaur: was my top dog (zoning?), but now I enjoy patient/smart movement with :ultsquirtle: (combo based) a lot and can sometimes get a good lead even against some pretty good players and my :ultcharizard:(bait & punish) sometimes gets me nice comebacks.

If I were to judge my skillset I'd say: 1) My disadvantage sucks (I can lose a huge :ultsquirtle: lead after getting knocked off stage as :ultivysaur:); 2) Neutral is pretty decent considering experience; 3) Sometimes I miss kill confirms and lose leads; 4) Recovery is mostly decent, save for occasional mistakes here and there; 5) I have problems landing sometimes and lose an entire stock to Palu U-air; 6) OOS can be really really good when I'm focused, especially considering the characters I use; 7) Spacing needs tons of work, which is more noticeable when using :ultjoker:; 8) I NEED TO SPOTDODGE MORE!.

I not closed to trying other characters that would help me improve more as a players, especially since :ultpokemontrainer:'s disadvantage always has me fishing for a gimmicky way out. The only other character I have any affinity for is :ultmegaman:, but damn he's hard. Some people have suggested trying a sword character.

P.S. My worst MUs are Fox, Falco and Sonic, I can't handle those meth using furries and their speed (:ultjoker: does help a lot).

I suggest you use Lucina :ultlucina: to start off. (Ike :ultike: is also good) Lucina first of all does good in almost everything (has good neutral, aerials, etc.), and has a really good match-up spread. After learning the fundamentals of the game with her, I later explored different characters with different play styles: I tried ZSS :ultzss: for a rush down character, and did pretty well with her. But later dropped her for she doesn’t fit my play style. Then as of now, I main Snake :ultsnake:, and secondary Palutena :ultpalutena:, and WFT :ultwiifittrainer:. All of which excels greatly in both rushing down players, and applying smart pressure to opponents.

Ultimate is a very diverse game with a multitude of characters that cater to a variety of play styles. Use Lucina or characters alike to know fundamentals, and try to explore all the different characters for one character might perfectly fit your play style! (I’ve been a Snake main since January, and back in the Brawl days; he just works really with me!)

I know everybody suggests :ultlucina:, but I just don't enjoy her, :ultmarth: feels better and I actually like him. He's currently my top pick because of how important spacing is and because he covers :ultpokemontrainer:'s bad MUs. I don't particularly dig :ultike:, so I'll always take :ultmarth: over him despite them being so different.

:ultzss: kinda has my attention. Her disadvantage is probably second to none, she's really fast and my favorite Pokémon is :ultsquirtle: lately. How is the learning curve for ZSS? To me she just looks like one of those characters whose play style is so different from everyone else's that her skills don't transfer that well. By learning :ultmarth:/:ultlucina:, you pretty much level up on swordies in general.

Even though I'm a noob, my general opinion is that this game has too much diversity to solo main. That's why I want a secondary and chose Richter at first to deal with heavy campers. I don't feel I'm close to good enough to solo main :ultpokemontrainer:. For example, not playing :ultrichter: against :ultolimar: just seems dumb to me.

Perhaps out of the characters I've played maybe :ultjoker: is more solo mainable, but it's more down to his comeback potential, cause he does have crappy MUs against tiny characters.

You use the word "cheese" a lot. If you want to get better at the game, rule one: cheese doesn't exist. The winner wins and the loser loses, and that's all there is to it. Never feel bad about who you play or how you play them. If it works, it works. When it stops working, try something else.

I don't think there's any specific character that will teach you "the fundamentals," whatever those even are. Everyone defines them differently. There was a thread here just recently debating the meaning and zero consensus within said thread. If you enjoy PT, play PT. It sounds like you know what your issues are--just keep practicing them mindfully. There's no proper speed at which improvement takes place. You should only be worried if it stops completely and you're not sure what to address.

I love a good Duck Hunt player as much as the next guy, so allow me to explain: If I lose neutral several times get put at high % and only get to kill :ultpalutena: from an :ultivysaur: dair 2 frame, that's cheese. U-air is truly just a tool, but pre-4.0 Up B was kinda getting me kills to early and I got used to that. Also getting use to having 1 additional air dodge from a Pokémon switch may be teaching me bad landing habits. Overall, 4.0 PT feels more balanced and less Ivy reliant, which is why I'm enjoying Squirtle more.

However, getting put at high % with :ultsquirtle: kinda throws my game plan away when facing a crappy ivy MU. I know it's all adaptation, but I can't help but think my overall progress is being halted by gimmicks.

Thanks a lot for reading the whole post! I'm aware of this and it's precisely the reason I wanna try other characters, I think I've stopped improving with PT. Perhaps a new character might frame the game a different way and even improve my :ultpokemontrainer: and make it less gimmicky.
