help making character textures

how do you use photoshop Cs4 to make character textures? the only thing i know how to do is basic coloring of the .tga files if that.
so, can anyone link me to a tutorial or help me? i have everything else needed to make the textures.




also, mods feel free to close this if this has been answered before. i haven't seen this asked before and there isn't a q&a thread for texture help here.
