Hey all, I recently took back an interest in smas bros. I don't have a wii. I have played brawl occasionally with people who have it, it's fun but it is very slow and annoying.
Smash bros was the first game I got, and I played it A LOT, and with friends as well, but I haven't really played it for at least a couple years. This time I want to be playing a bit more professionally-I'm learning wavedashing and the such.

So I'm trying falco, and I'm learning the SHL technique as well. My question is how do you generally approach people with falco, when they have low percent? I've had some success with using my dair a lot as well as my downb. I have read the stickies in this forum and they are very helpful, just looking for some responses.

Here is a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fyhcnPRL6MQ
I was falco, unfortunately I got schooled. I'd really appreciate advice on how to improve.

Thank you!

eh, approaching is usually not best. you usually want to wait until they do something you can punish or predict their movement and hit them out of it. if your opponents are noobs, laser laser dair shine is sufficient.

go to youtube and search for dashizwiz, dr pp, mango, forward, pc chris falco videos. absorb their wisdom.

You need to work on your basic tech skill. Work on l-canceling and all your movement options.

Thanks for the response, I'll be sure to continue learning to l cancel.

Can you be more specific about movement options?

Also, it seems he dodged a good lot of my attacks. How do I counter his dodging? My blaster probably isn't going to work well since he is fox and just deflects my shots.
Thanks again, any advice helps.

Like, incorporating wavedashing/wavelanding and dashdancing into your movements. You want to fake opponents out a lot. You want to bait your opponent and fake him a lot instead of just running at him to approach. Watch a lot of videos like FoxLisk said and you'll see what I mean.

As for the dodging, if you know it's coming, you should be able to counter it. Bait the dodge, wait a second and attack. As for the blaster, you can do a couple things. You can short hop laser and shine when you land, which will just deflect it back, or you can bait his deflector and shoot a blank shot (late laser in a short hop) and close the space while he tries to deflect it.

if he is trying to reflect ****, shoot a low laser, jump over it, dair him. he's stuck in the shine for a moment. also hold on ima edit this after i watch your videos.

edit: oh. um. there's no point in me providing detailed critique. here's some things:

1) for like a week, don't roll at all. no rolls. no side dodges either. do not allow yourself to roll or dodge. at all. don't do it. you'll improve a lot.

2) learn to wavedash

3) wavedash out of your shines

4) laser to stop fox's movement, not just randomly

5) spend a lot of time watching pro falco videos. seriously. just emulate their plans. just blindly copying pros will be quite sufficient for you to destroy that fox. get the patterns in your head, then start thinking about your own ideas.

6) DO NOT ROLL.

Yes, I've watched a lot of pro falco videos, especially those of bombsoldier. I'll continue to observe.

I will heed both of your advice, and I'll try the not-rolling as well. By the way FoxLisk, why is rolling bad?

Thank you both, I really appreciate your input.

because if you roll that much, an opponent who isn't busy also rolling back and forth all the time will just walk over to where you're about to roll and fsmash you. or combo or whatever.

dont watch bombsoldier. his play, while revolutionary, was very 1-dimensional. watch mango and dashizwiz and zhu.

basically what foxlisk was.

i noticed you relied a lot on rolling. dont roll. it will get you punished everytime.

also about your approaching question. if im going to approach i like nair.. its almost my safest option. lazering into nair or dair sometimes.

lasering into nair or dair approaches is sort of abstractly the safest, most sensible approach. however, everyone and their ****ing duck knows how to deal with it, so don't use it very often. it will annihilate scrubby players though.

basically laser laser nair shine is the lowest level of falco autopilot approach. it's solid but it's easily countered so if you do it a lot you get owned.
