I've been playing Smash since the N64, but have only recently started to play it for a competitive aspect. Trying to further my skills, I joined Smashboards to hopefully learn a thing or two from some experienced players. On Melee, I can't decide what my main is, because I like to play so many characters. I've noticed that I'm pretty good with Marth, Sheik and Captain Falcon, and I usually win. I'm trying to look for more of a challenge, because all my friends aren't really competitive like I am. I feel as if my skills won't get better if I continue to battle the same people, so I'm kind of stumped at the moment. I would probably get smashed at a tournament, but I know the basics like wavedashing and I know how to DI pretty well. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could give me, a beginner, some advice to help hone my skills even further. Thanks!

Welcome to Smashboards Zennoh :)

Check out The Beginner's Guide to Playing Super Smash Bros. Competitively. It contains a good deal of information that should prove to be helpful for you. The biggest thing in my opinion is to make sure you have the fundamentals down pretty well before you tackle on more tech. Being Mr. Fundamentals can take you a long away. Solid fundamentals will beat a player with great tech skill that doesn't really know what to do with it.

Well, your bound to learn plenty with all of the resources we have around here, so feel free to look around some. Other than that, hopefully you'll stick around and commune with the fellow Smashers here.

Oh yeah, nice avatar. Mikasa da bess

Thanks for this, Chapter 5 was the most helpful. Even though I knew how to wavedash, I didn't really apply it when actually playing. Does that come with experience, or should I just practice all these techniques until I can do them flawlessly? I watched the Smash documentaries a few months back, and all the pro players said they practiced tenaciously to get to their skill level, especially M2K. I want to become a pro, but I don't think I have that much dedication to practice for half the day.

Thanks for the avatar compliment :D

It comes with experience of playing matches against human opponents. Training mode is good for simply practicing tech skill, but learning to apply it comes with play against other people.

And yeah, the amount of time put in for Smash varies from person to person. Some people are naturals and can pick up on things pretty quickly, have tech skill and can just get pretty good at a nice rate. Others may find themselves practicing hours and hours because they either don't master things as quickly or they are trying to reach a level close to perfection with everything that they do. With the pro players, they do a lot of traveling and practice with some of the best players in the region often. It really just all depends on the person honestly...

The amount of work you put in is the amount you can expect to get out. That's pretty much the gist of it.
