Side notes: After typing this I saw the sheer length of this and released this took an hour to type due to the flashbacks. I wanted to be unique. Anyways enjoy my long talk about my experience with Super Smash Bros!
My Tag Story:
I actually had some had some difficulty picking a tag for myself. I choose ZFlat because at the time my music teacher joked about my trumpet skills. The most obscure notes I would play, he would call them Z flats because they didn't exist in the musical scale. I'm a better musician now (can play drums, guitar, bass, ukulele, trumpet, piano and various auxiliary percussion), but that memory has stuck with me ever since. The alternatives for my tag were going to be ZedFlat, Zb, Zedb, or Viet (I'm Vietnamese but american born).
My Smash Story:
My first memory of Super Smash Bros was of Melee. This was around 2005. I was avid about all things Nintendo and Mario. So when i went over to my friends house to play some Double Dash, I noticed a box with a bunch of random characters on it. That box was Super Smash Brothers Melee. I picked up Mario and immediately had mixed feelings in the game. Why is there three different controls for jump? Why do Side + A and the C stick do the same thing? Why the hell is Pichu in the game and where the hell is Raichu? Thus my first time picking up melee was my last time i would pick up melee for a looooooooooong time.
Fast forward to 2008 and the only Nintendo things I had was Gameboy SP and a Nintendo Wii. My next door neighbor had a get together and I was invited to play with them. That was the day I was introduced to Super Smash Bros Brawl. I had difficulty choosing a proper control scheme. So I picked up the most obscure control scheme. Horizontal Wiimote. Despite that decision, I actually did well for next 3 years and picking up every single character well. Rules were set to 3 stock, infinite time and all items on. I later picked up my first GameCube controller to play smash and immediately despised the feel of the analog stick. And then I dropped Super Smash Brothers Brawl because it wasn't interesting to me anymore (plus sisters got discouraged every time they lost)
Then college came around in Fall 2015. During my first semester around the month of August, there was a lounge with two TV's hooked up with a Nintendo Wii and PlayStation 3. The Wii's back, sides, and bottom were blocked off so that no one could steal them, and playing GameCube games were an obvious NO. When i went to the lounge, two people were playing brawl on the Wii using Wiimote+Nunchuck combo. I asked to join and they accepted. The rules were 3 stock, 5 minutes and no items. I chose Kirby, played with horizantal Wiimote, and lost. This was the first time I discovered how broken brawl was. There was no balance among the characters and that's why most people chose Meta Knight and Diddy Kong.
A month passes after that. I was aware of the release of Super Smash Brothers for Wii U or Sm4sh, as some call it, but I never got into it during it's initial release. At this time I already had a group to hang out with in college. A friend brings their Wii U and puts in Sm4sh. A bunch joined in and ask me to play. Rules at this point were 3 stock, 4 minutes, no items, Sudden Death on. I accepted their offer, but was stuck with the decision of choosing a character. Dan, a good friend, introduced to Little Mac (ooh boy). I liked Mac. He had powerful neutrals/punches, had great special moves(up+b for the kill), super armor for most of his moves, a KO punch, but had a bad recovery (I knew that from the start). I lost every single match, but wanted to get better.
That night I searched up on google "How to get better at super smash bros" and I discovered the competitive smash scene. I immediately learned a lot and managed to teach others what i learned through a simple google search. Vectoring, spot dodging, mind games and perfect shielding. I also learned about certain smashers and match ups, like BizzaroFlame EASYMONEY match against Eikelmann and loved Mew2King's playstyle.
Anyways, later during the year, I picked up a GameCube controller as well as Luigi, Yoshi, and my new main, as of January 2016, Cloud. Cloud in my eyes is like a laggy Little Mac, with a sword, combined with melee Marth. Over the summer, I learned how to hack my Wii to play Project M 3.6 and Melee (20xx Training Pack too). I can't wavedash but I nailed L-canceling. And I can say, without a doubt, that I love Super Smash Bros.
TL;DR: Didn't like melee at first, liked brawl but learned a weird control scheme, learned about the smash bros community after researching sm4sh. I love smash now.
My Overall and Plans:
I have not joined any tournaments yet, but I do have plan to attend some at my university . I am a person who knows more about a game compared to their skill in game. I want to commentate as much as I want to get better and learn about smash bros.
Thanks for reading all of this. I congratulate those who took the time to read it.
