Basically I watched the smash brothers documentary sometime in the winter, and I really wanted to play. But after getting a Gamecube controller and Brawl I don't know how to train to make myself better. As far as I can see there are no good players around me, but anything would help. Thanks.

First thing's first: find your scene. If you're networking, then it shouldn't be hard. Facebook's a pretty great tool for finding players. Find a friend who's into Smash, or games in general, and see what their interest in competitive Smash is. Then find a friend of a friend, and so on. It snowballs really quickly.

As far as training goes, just focus on good movement first. Get the hang of short hopping, fast falling, and options out of your dash.

I agree with Fortress! Finding players can be tough but there are tons of groups on Facebook you can search for in your area. Don't be afraid to jump in the fray. Smash players are some of the nicest people I have met. As far as training pick a character you're comfortable with and do research. Learn what his/her options are and practice the movement leading to those options. Don't assume you're going to be amazing right away. There's so much technical stuff to this game it blows my mind!Practice, practice. If I can't find some people to Smash with the level 9CPU's aren't too bad for a day of random shenanigans.

Thanks a lot man, I really wish Nintendo WFC was still up so I could battle some people online. I've been using Marth a lot recently.

No problem! I think there's an option in something called Dolphin for online? Not sure as I have not used it myself. I'm pretty close to a local scene here myself!

But I thought the AI in all Smash Games is terrible and that training with them is questionable even when set to level 9 :) In some ways, it might even make a player worse by doing stuff that will only work on CPUs, and Human players will easily shed it off and dominate the other player.

Not to say that it's a bad idea, but I personally learn more from playing with humans (despite being an amatuer myself) than from CPUs; you don't want to get too overly attached to it. Some top players like Mew2King train with CPUs though.

While that's true for Melee/Brawl. The coder at PM has done well making the CPU's a bit better. A level 9 CPU in PM is much more aggressive and will occasional use tech and can combo with crazy speed. You're right that playing just CPU's is a bad habit and I wouldn't recommend that!

Where do I go to find my friend code? I never wrote it down.
Nintendo Wifi wasn't a good place to practice because of the lag. Nintendo took down the Wii's online service not long ago anyway, so the only way to play online is with netplay, which is a feature on the dolphin emulator. Here is a guide , and once you've got everything finished you can go here to find matches. I recommend getting a mayflash usb adaptor

Wouldn't just launching the game through the homebrew channel be a loophole around this?if you can't use Dolphin? It still might be laggy, but shouldn't it work at all?

The Nintendo Wifi service was discontinued. Plus netplay is less laggy than Nintendo wifi if you play with people around your region

I feel that training with CPUs is good for learning the limits of what your character can do, but unfortunately you cant learn mind games with a computer.

Sorta along the lines that were said here. But, I think it's easy to say that Smash in general is much more technical than you're leading on. Also, I'd advise against the last line as it does seem to form habits [Thread quoting..] but they're not bad for training yourself in getting your technicals down. The bots provide pressure and therefore should help with learning your techs - just remember it still can't compare to actual tournament pressure.

Yeah that's what I'm saying. I don't have dolphin or a gamecube adapter though and I don't think I can get one anytime soon. I need to find a way to play Online so this doesn't happen to me, someone help!

if you have a wifi safe project m then you can add a file and still play online but it requires you to delete your brawl save in order to work. ive already inquired about it so here is the link to my thread that helped me http://smashboards.com/threads/is-there-a-way-to-play-over-wii-wifi-still.359042/

...so I can't play smash online on my wii? I was asking how to find my friend code..I never wrote it down.
Start a new brawl save file and you'll get a new one that you can write down now. There's a save file somewhere on the internet that already has everything unlocked, so you an just find it and put it on ur wii.
