Long time smash fan here. I've been playing the game consistently for most of my life, ever since the original. Even when my friends and I grew older, and they decided "Nintendo is for babies," I still proudly played my shiny new Wii that I had bought :awesome:. In extreme anticipation, I've been hanging GameFAQs to talk about the game, and sadly I've only ever lurked around this site up until now. GameFAQs has quickly become filled with idiotic topics, and when I saw how mature the people are over here, I decided I'd try to join in.

There is, however, another reason that I wanted to join Smashboards; I'm finding myself becoming increasingly interested in the competitive style of fighting. I don't really plan on going to any tournaments, mainly because my studies won't allow it, but I still enjoy watching tournament matches online. I know about a few of the basics (approaches, countering, etc.) but the main issue for me is applying it when in a fight. I find myself doing a "half button mash" if that makes sense, where I know what the buttons do and what my attacks are, but I sorta use attacks willy nilly without noticing until it's too late. My sense of strategy just deteriorates as the match progesses, probably because of all the excitement and chaos. The worst part about it is that I use slow powerhouses most of the time (Dedede, and Gannondorf, mainly) so my attacks are really hit and miss, and frequently I find myself saying "Why didn't I do that?!" or "I should have seen it coming!" It's a bad habit, and I'd like to try breaking it in preparation for the new game. If anyone can share some advice on remaining in calm and in control of what I'm doing, I'd greatly appreciate it :chuckle:.

Hm, I don't really have much advice on staying calm and in control aside from just trying to truly get a feel for your character. Once you know your character, you have an understanding on their limitations/weaknesses, know how to utilize their moves and you're aware of how you should go about playing certain characters. At the moment, you may not be paying enough attention to your opponent to catch onto their habits so you can adjust accordingly. A nice strategy is just learning to play your opponent and avoid playing on auto-pilot.

I'd suggest possibly starting fresh and taking a look at this guide for competitive Smash.

Hope all the info is helpful to you. Glad to have you apart of the community here :)
