when I go to tournaments I notice that some of the better players wear headphones or earbuds when they play. Why?

Blocks out distractions like the crowd or trash talk and allows for better focus.

Some people like to listen to music for various reasons. Reasons include that listening to music can drown out the player's surroundings for them to be able to focus while another can simply be a distraction from the stress of competing. It's a slight disadvantage however as humans can react 2 to 4 frames faster to sound than sight.

That seems legitimate. Although, being distracted lowers reaction time too, so there's a bit of a trade off. The best would probably be headphones plugged into the gamepad.

I wear them versus players who shake around or talk during tournament sets, because that stuff irritates me and music helps me drown it out. Also I wear them during friendlys sometimes because I enjoy playoff to music/talking to certain people can be awkward
