Hey, guys. I'm having a lot of issues with selecting a main character that is both fun to play and viable in tournaments. My main issue is that I've narrowed my options down to 8 characters that I like playing the most out of the whole roster, but I would only like to main two of them: a real main and a co-main to use for the match-ups against characters that the main isn't good at. I've heard from some friends that this community is extremely knowledgeable with the different characters and their match-ups, so I have come here for help. Now that I have stated what this thread is about, I'm going to name the characters that I have narrowed down from countless hours of play:
1. Mega-Man: One of the very first characters that I've played, and by far one of my favorites to play. Great projectile game that is able to square-off against campy Toon Links and Villagers (in my opinion). I love this character, but he just feels clunky to me with his laggy smash attacks, not to mention that I've killed myself accidentally using the down-aerial to try and spike people. Overall, I have fun playing this character but he feels weird in every tournament that I've gone to. The clunkiness has gotten better for me, but it is still an issue.
2. Ness: Another one of my favorite characters on the roster. Good projectile game in the form of PK Fire and PK Thunder, great aerials, good jab, amazing grab and the best kill throw in the game. I love playing as this character, but I feel like I have to get a grab on somebody in order to set up different combos and establish stage control. One match-up that I find to be the most annoying with Ness is Link, mostly because my friend mains him. Every time I try to approach, he rolls to the other side of the stage and spams projectiles and whenever I get close he uses a smash attack or his jab and I usually get hit. I find it extremely annoying to play against Link with Ness, but he handles most of my other match-ups very well, because whenever my friend uses his other main Shulk against my Ness, I usually two-stock him with ease. A solid option, but I can't really deal with campers and spammers too well with Ness.
3. Diddy Kong: I've had a lot of fun with this character, but never used him at tournaments because I didn't want to be branded as a "tier-*****". I've only just picked him up after he was nerfed, but to me he is still a viable character and is easily in the top 10. I find that he plays similarly to Ness, he has to get a grab to set up most of the time and has a great projectile in the form of his banana. I'm able to punish rolls with the banana, so that's a plus. But I've found it to be very difficult to play him post-patch than he was pre-patch. His aerials are weaker, I can barely get any combos and I have to work very hard with this guy just to get a measly kill. A fun character, my friend isn't good at fighting him, but I don't feel too confident with the nerfed member of the DK Crew.
4. Dark Pit: I loved Kid Icarus: Uprising, and I'll admit, when I saw Nairo play Dark Pit I just fell in love with that playstyle. I've only picked him up recently, so I don't know too much, but he seems like a nice and fair character to fight against. My main selling point with this character is his amazing recovery, grab, aerials and tilts. The dash attack to me is good for punishing rolls. Overall, I like this character because he has a lot of potential, but I don't know much about him.
5. Rosalina: I'm a big fan of Super Mario Galaxy, and I was very excited when Rosalina was first announced as a playable character. To me, she feels amazing and I love this character to bits. The main problem with her is her placing in the "tier list". I love her, but I don't want to be branded as a tier-***** when I play her. I will main her if you guys say I should because she feels amazing to me, but I don't want to be discriminated against.
6. Sonic: I'm a big fan of the Sonic series (minus 06 and Boom, those were so horribly bad) and I like his speed and agility. I find it extremely easy to maintain stage control and punish rolls, plus I love to mess with people with spin-dash shield cancelling. Love this character, but I'm having the same issue that I am with Rosalina, not a lot of people like him. I don't want to be known as a tier-*****, but I will play as him if you guys say that I should.
7. Meta-Knight: One of my favorite characters in Nintendo history. I played him all of the time when I was a kid back in Brawl, but the ironic thing about that is I didn't know that he was overpowered until Smash 3DS was out! I took the time to practice with Meta-Knight's weaker self in Smash 4, and I did okay for awhile but eventually dropped him. I still love this character, but I don't know what I can do to be successful with Meta-Knight in Smash 4.
8. R.O.B: One of my most recent possible mains that I've experimented with. He feels like a more powerful Mega-Man, but I think I prefer Mega-Man over this guy. Love R.O.B, but I don't know whether to use him or Mega-Man.
That's about it for the characters that I've experimented with. I am still struggling with finding a main and finding a co-main from this list of seven characters that work well together in tournaments. If you could offer me your input on what I should do, that would be greatly appreciated. Thank all of you so much for reading this eyesore of a forum post, and have a great day.
