Having trouble avoiding attacks

Recently I've had trouble when playing Smash Bros 3DS online, this is because any attempt I have at dodging or rolling is punished instantly and my shields are constantly being grabbed or simply ignored, meanwhile my opponents perfect shield my attacks a helluvalot more than they should do, I've not had this trouble before, but it's just started recently. I also can't play properly against friends because I'm having a consistent losing streak against them due to the fact that, while they get better, my skills are getting worse as time goes on.

I've considered perhaps I'm telegraphing my attacks too much but no matter how I switch up my attacks it still happens. I would consider practicing more but I know I'm better than I'm playing at the moment, due to my previous wins. I also know I have a habit of rolling too much but when I try and avoid doing it so it doesn't get punished, I get gimped.

The main problem I'm having is that my performance has degraded, from being able to pull off some crazy stuff to walking in to my opponents attacks despite them being heavily telegraphed, I feel my reflexes are a lot slower.

I ask you Smashboards, wot do? inb4 get gud

It's possible you're just having a bad Smash day, either due to lack of sleep, stress, or something else. Everyone gets them, they're days when you just feel like your reactions are off and everything and you can't pull off strings like you normally do.

But if your skills are actually getting worse, I'm not really sure how that works. Practice will help you out though.

Don't worry this isn't GFAQs, most of us will actually help out. READ MY REPLY TO GREEN FLAME.

This happens to me a lot. On Sunday-Thursday I play normally, on a Friday I play like CRAP, and on Saturday.....lets just say when I am playing like crap on Friday my body is charging up for what I like to call "Hype Mode". I don't understand why when I play terribly one day I play like some amazing tournament player on the next. Yesterday (which at the time of posting this today is Sunday) I did a bunch of beautiful combos, got a bunch of spikes, and I am a Marth main so I also got like 2-3 tipper f smashes in nearly every match I played using him. A lot of us just have bad days, but unfortunately for some of use like me we don't play at our maximum capacity a majority of the time.

It seems to work similarly for me. My 'bad days' lead up into days where I pull off amazing combos/strings, and everything feels fluent and controllable. I'm not quite sure how my brain suddenly speeds up its reaction times, but it's very satisfying to have one of those, as you called them, "Hype Mode" days.

Trust me, this can be the same for me. I'm already an anxious person by nature, but on some days it gets to me more than others. Some days when I actually can win games, I feel brilliant and get thoroughly hooked. These are the days I usually learn the most about characters. Other days I lose so many times I just put the character-select-token on Random and hope for the best. :p

Have had the same trouble before, and my solution was quite simple: stop playing and put your effort somewhere else. You can still watch videos of smash or lurk the forums, but don't play the game. After a short period of time, your approach to the game might have changed.
