Having some trouble punishing smash attacks

I feel like a noob for asking this but with the new shield stun changes I swear some smash attacks have become completely safe on shield. I normally dont have to deal with smash attack spammers but when I do I can have a difficult time dealing with their bs. Some smash attacks have a reasonable amount of endlag like :4myfriends: but others dont *cough* :4mario: *cough* For example I was fighting a dr.mario on FG the other day and this guy's favorite move was his FSmash which he would abuse the hell out of when I hit death %. I literally tried every out of shield option there is after shielding the FSmash (dash atk, DAir/NAir OOS) but he would always be able to pull out the shield or spot dodge afterwards. I really dont like the spot dodging then punish option since I sometimes happen to mistime it so that it ends as soon as the smash hitbox comes out so do u guys have any suggestions for me...?

I don't Spot Dodge very often myself as I too tend to mistime it often; however there may be more than just that as an option.

I suppose it all depends on your opponents habits. For example, if they tend to shield a lot you could probably easily manage a grab as soon as you get out of your shield if he ends up shielding your out of shield attacks. You could also attempt to roll behind them and try to do the same thing, or attempt to attack them from behind. If they tend to Dodge/Spot Dodge a lot though my safest option would be distance. Again, I suppose it really depends on your opponents habits. Just watch them and see if anything can be taken advantage of.

I'm just a moderate player, so my advice may not be the best but it's probably what I would attempt in those situations.

Better option: don't. Especially not against a Mario, who have nefariously fast smash attacks.

I'm pretty sure I get grabbed out of decently spaced sh NAIRS with mario so I'm pretty sure his smash attack is punishable on perfect shield for sure.
May be lag because I don't get enough local time, but I'm sure if I can get manhandled on some of his safer moves by better players I'm sure fsmash is not safe.

Try concentrating on actually anticipating when this smash will come out, what factors of your play tend to force a fsmash, and react from there. I tend to get grabs against most smashes especially playing mario/fox.

All of (Dr.) Mario's smashes are still punishable on shield after the patch, but the punish window is small and wifi lag can be enough to make it hard if not impossible. If you're able to I'd recommend practicing your punishes until they're down to muscle memory, but when you're playing online you sometimes have to accept that you aren't really playing the same game.
