I can't seem to get the controls I customized working. I would select controls, create a name, enter into that profile and choose my buttons then save. But afterwards when I go into any game mode, the controls I chose are not implemented. Please help!

Did you choose your name when you were on the character select screen? If you didn't that's probably why.

Thats what I figure. But I cant seem to locate the spot to do that. When I select custom, the colors just change

On the character select screen, go to the player one part on the bottom and click it. the control options will open up. i couldn't figure out how to set it via the main smash game option though because it will just switch to cpu. and you have to constantly reset the controls. its a giant blight on the game imo. luckily i managed to nab an adaptor and with the gcn controller i dont have to bother with customization.

putting the grab on the pro u/gamepad trigger buttons was a stupid decision.

Where you select your name is under the part that says Player 1. Select it and the controls you have set to your name should be there.

It is very, very irritating that I have to select my controls (by selecting my name) every. single. time. I newly enter. any. mode.

Do Target Blast? Have to select my name again. Do Multi-Man Smash? Have to select my name again. Do training mode? Have to select my name again. Do Classic Mode? Have to select my name again. Do an online match? Have to select my name again. Decide to leave the room and go back so I can fight a different person? Have to select my name again.

Particularly annoying in the last case since reentering and forgetting to do it, and then going into a match and trying to dodge with the grab button can really screw you over.

You'd think, that, you know. I'm doing single player online. I'm the only one playing! If someone else takes the control and wants a different name, they can change it themselves! Why can't it remember my name across different modes?

So it's actually the bar directly below where it says player one. Then you can select a name. You can do that for all modes or in event mode off to the left you can select the name. It was driving me crazy before I figured it out.

My biggest beef so far with the Wii U version. After seeing how the 3DS pleasantly adopts your preferences as the default, this is annoying.

Agreed. After playing the 3DS version, it is considerably annoying having to select my profile every time I want to play something. On top of that, I really wish the game would remember the alts I like playing the most, like the 3DS version does.

I've finally found it thanks to all your help. FYI, you don't click on the "player" spot. Best is you press on the lower right of that player square, or whatever you want to call it. There is a TINY icon that upon pressing will pop up a drop down selector that will then let you choose your profile settings. I agree that it's irritating that you have to do this EVERY time. but my biggest beef is how it's so cryptic finding out how to do this in the first place. I spent almost an hour going around each menu within the game for any clues, reading thru manuals, looking online, etc and no luck. This forums was my last resort and if it weren't for you guys, I would never have found it. Thanks so much!

I REALLY wish there was a setting to default the controls you like. I have started so many games now where I forgot to change them, and my shield / grab inputs would be screwed due to them not being my custom controls. The small button on the character select screen to do so is also hard to find and isn't that obvious, either.

Particularly annoying since the default controls are tap-jump and, for the Pro Controller, R/L shield and ZR/ZL grab. Which puts shield as the top trigger! I tend to make it R = grab and all other triggers = shield because grab was only on the top right on the GameCube, but the Z trigger was also ABOVE the R trigger, so it should be the higher trigger button.

But instead they switched the position on the basis of the names (it says ZR, and people obviously care more about the names of the buttons staying the same than the positions... I always read the trigger buttons before I press them).

I suppose this probably won't be as much of a problem when I get my GameCube adapter. I didn't get one yet since I don't have my GameCube controllers here. But I assume the controls default to the correct positions for that. Tap-jump is still annoying though. Not as bad as trying to shield and getting hit in the face because it was grab though.
