Why isn't pausing simply disabled in tournaments? Keep in mind that this is a question for more than just Project M. I look at the rules for regional tournaments, and they have a punishment for pausing the game while the match is being played. And I always think to myself: "Why don't they simply disable pausing?" What do you guys think?

I believe it's just generally assumed that the players with have the restraint and technical discipline to not press the start button, purposely or accidentally. I think pause should be disabled once the match settings are finalized, but some people prefer it left on to easily quit at the end of a match or in case an error is made during the match. Common errors include selecting the wrong stage, team attack/friendly fire is off, or even after some shenanigans, items are left on. It certainly saves time to just quit the match, especially if on stream.

I'd really like it if they could program it so you gotta hold Start for like a full second before the game actually pauses. Or at least to have that as an additional option, just for situations like the one above.

I'd also prefer we have an actual pause screen MENU, but that's probably just a pipe dream xD

It is turned off very often. The only reason that it's sometimes left on is for the reasons that Sartron said.
