So my wife noticed this the other day -- the characters line up perfectly with a deck of cards! If you have a deck of cards, you'll hit every character in the game. Add in a Joker and you can get Lucas on the 14th.
There are tons of things you can do with this information, but here's a few examples:
- The Random Battle
Want to do random and not use equipment? Draw cards from a shuffled deck.
- Character Draft Pick
Want to do an iron man or a random character money match, but don't want to have someone win due to getting "their character" at random?
Use a deck of cards! Lay out 3 to 5 cards and players take turns taking one card, discarding another, and drawing another card to lay out. You get slightly randomized characters, but you choose from this.
- Have a multi-character tournament with no overlap
Having a small house tournament, or maybe a local you want to spice up? Add in a side event where everyone draws a card and that card is their character. Everyone will play a different character the whole event!
- Picking your character in tournament
Have twelve characters you want to play in tournament and don't know who to pick? Use the deck to decide.
- Character elimination
My personal favorite, you can run a Swiss character elimination event! Have each player in the tournament draw two cards. Each player plays someone else at random by choosing their character card (say, Ace of Spades for Mario).
If you win, you keep your cards. If you lose, you discard a card.
For the next round, half your players will have 1 card and the other half will have 2. Have players with 1 card play each other and players with 2 cards play each other. If a player runs out of cards, they are eliminated.
