Has the starter characters only update theory gone out the window?

Is it me or does it seem like Sakurai is just announcing every character instead of only starter characters? For one, if it is starter character only updates up till release, we have A LOT of starters. Second, wasn't Snake stated as being unlockable? Maybe they put an update out of him cuz he was previously announced.

There's no way of knowing.

However Sakurai did say he wanted to be the first to reveal the roster. So look for a lot of character updates the next two months. Lucas might actually be unlockable.

well so far everyone released is either a) assumed a starter b) already known about or c) widely speculated that they would be in. we wont really know for sure if some of these guys are unlockable or not until someone crazy like ridley or someone like him is announced IMO.

Uh...yeah. They both fall into one of those categories. We knew Snake was going to be in the game and it was speculated by a lot of people that Lucas was going to be in. Not sure what you were getting at...

In any case, what exactly is wrong with so many starters? Are you assuming that there's not really gonna be a big roster in the first place? Melee took the total amount of characters and surpassed it for it's amount of starters. Granted, this meant adding less total characters to Melee than it would mean for Brawl, but I personally was hoping/expecting to do something similar or close to it. If everyone on the site so far is a starter, that would be great.

Of course, if all the "NEW CHALLENGER!" posts ARE unlockable characters...well then I guess we'll have to wait and see =/

I'd say that one went out the window when Snake was announced, considering we know he and all other 3rd-party "guest" characters will be unlockable. Not to mention Sakurai's journal said he would announce all the characters due to the fact that they'd just be leaked via the internet eventually anyway, implying he intended to do so before that happens, i.e. before the game's release, which has always led me to believe it was an erroneous assumption from the start.

For Melee, he didn't start showing hidden characters until after he showed every starter character. Also, when he started showing the hidden characters, he said that they were hidden and told how to unlock them as part of the update. I think that that's how he'll do Brawl too. He hasn't said anything about hidden characters in any of the character updates so far, so I'm pretty sure that all of the characters that we've seen so far are starting characters.

The people who say that Snake was already confirmed as a hidden character don't know what they're talking about. Sakurai never said that. He said that he thought guest characters, like Snake, may be better suited as hidden characters. He probably changed his mind about Snake, because he thought it was stupid to waste a hidden character spot on a character everyone already knew about.

Sakurai may not show any hidden characters until after the game comes out, but I'm pretty sure the entire character list will get out some how before then.
