Has anyone had character "phases" in Smash and other Fighting Games?

I notice that me and my friends are always trying to find a new main, and always saying "Oh, I wanna main x" and we do for a while, but then we just move on to a new character. I don't only see this with smash, some pro street fighter players will play a character for a few months and just drop them suddenly.

I don't know, I could just be looking to hard into this.

For sure. Even for subs this happens to me a lot. It's definitely a normal thing that happens to a lot of people.

When Cloud first came out in Sm4sh I pretty much only played as him for like a month, but now he's a secondary main for me.

I got SOOOOOO hyped for mewtwo when he got announced, and soent the time until he came out consatantly excited.
Then I played him for about a month-month and a half (two max), before I discovered I was much better than any of my previous mains with Ike. Before Mewtwo it was Shulk, before Shulk it was Bowser, Ganondorf, and Captain Falcon.

I definitely can see this happen a lot with Smash. It's so easy to just pick up a character and roll with it for a bit.

The first time I played Melee (with any idea how to use a GameCube controller) I originally had no idea who to choose. I then decided that Kirby would be my pick... but it got bad pretty quickly.

So then I said, why not Mario? I gave him a shot, and got some promising results. I'm still working on not losing every game though... so it may change again. Who knows?

Yeah, this happens a lot more often than you would think. Robin was my first main, and I probably cycled through a fifth of the roster looking for one to replace him. Mario, Bowser, Bowser Jr., Fox, Falco, Lucario, Mewtwo, Samus, Toon Link, Mr. Game & Watch, Pit, Wario, Olimar, Villager, Wii Fit Trainer, and Duck Hunt are all of my scrapped mains. In other fighting games, I guess it happens just as often. Splatoon may not be a fighting game, but I do switch between weapon sets. It's only natural to strive for change.

I main or have mained :4bayonetta2:,:4bowser:,:4cloud:,:4corrinf:,:4duckhunt:,:4ganondorf:,:4megaman:,:4marth:,:4lucario:,:4link:,:4littlemac:,:4kirby:,:4robinm:,:4feroy:,:4shulk:,:4tlink:,:4larry:, :4miibrawl:,:4miigun:, and :4miisword: on and off, and am currently looking at my options to narrow these down.

I've played two other fighting games, and I don't really have a main roulette in either of them because I generally suck in Playstation All Stars: Battle Royale, and Amaterasu, Zero, and Dante are three of the few characters that I actually care about in the game, so I use them exclusively (The fact that I have trouble playing with the arcade style controls factor into this as well).

I did that in Brawl with Meta Knight. Then I felt dirty for using him because he's too good.

I'm currently having a possible phase in Pokken. I really like Pikachu, like really really like Pikachu, but I'm not sure if it's just a phase carrying over from Smash because I also enjoy Garchomp, Lucario, and Machamp. So I'm wondering if it's possible I might be maining someone else, and Pikachu is just currently placeholder until then.

I'll have to play more Pokken and unlock Mewtwo and Shadow Mewtwo and toy around with everyone first to figure it out.

I was desperately needing a secondary for my Mario back in December, so I decided to pick Dark Pit up as a secondary, since I do like the original NES KI and Pit himself.
I played him for a week then forgot about him.

I tried playing Robin, Zero Suit Samus and Yoshi at the 3DS launch. Robin just didn't suit me and I forgot about the other two. I ignored Lucina a bit for Roy at the day of his launch. He was really fun to play as but I decided to go back to my main. I've tried to get back into Link and Toon Link. That was a bad idea, as it didn't turn out well. As the moment, it looks like the same thing is going to happen to Pit and Luigi. Excuse me while I now go do something about it.

Yeah, quite often, actually. When I got the game, I mained Duck Hunt, but then I ended up switching to Sheik, then to Shulk, then to Mewtwo, then to Lucina, before finally landing on Pikachu at around July 2015.

When I first played the game I basically mained Doc. But that was before I owned the game myself and had a chance to screw around with characters in my own time. Soon swapped to Roy (Koopa!) when I got the game because "I just wanted to play Roy." and haven't really looked back since.

I will say though that Roy has always been my "Bench main." which means that even if I'm basically maining another character, I know I'll basically always end up back at him or can probably do better as him. But my secondaries and 'funs' have been a constant mess of shuffling characters. I used to secondary Ganon and basically main Robin, but I phased Ganon out for Bowser in 1.1.3, and soon Bowser got shifted to a tertiary, then I started basically maining Samus instead, and Meta Knight soon followed as a secondary, basically phasing out Bowser completely in the process, and I just recently phased out Robin, too, since I just don't play her anymore. -and still, there's a chance I'll revisit characters or change secondaries again yet. -and that's just about the top 3/4 characters I played!

I think the only consistent characters on my roster have been Doc (As a 'fun' or backup secondary.), weirdly enough Dark Pit (As a 'for fun' character and more recently a backup secondary too.), and Roy himself.

Oh, and I can say for certain from experience, it happens in other fighting games, too, but I'll not bore people with the details of those, too. lol

The only thing I will say though is that I feel there's pretty much always a certain character people will sway back to. "That one character" who they can't really get away from playing altogether. It's why I basically coined Roy as my "bench main". There's never a time I don't feel like playing him. There's times where I feel like playing other characters more, but it never stops me wanting to play him.
