This is pretty basic and this a topic I don't really have much of an opinion on but I do wanna hear yours. Do you guys think it's harder, easier, or just the perfect time for people to start trying to get into melee at a high competitive level?

It's a hell of a lot easier with 20XX, compared to say, three years ago.

Honestly, the huge wealth of information available to new players in the smash community makes it much more accessible than say, 5 years ago. If you have basically any question, you can easily get a good answer with a few clicks.

Wouldn't the wealth of info make the skill gap between new and advanced players make it harder to get into the scene?

Not really, it means new players now don't have to be in a very active region to learn about what they can practice/do to get better. There are more resources available to them, compared to like 3 years ago where the best you had were guides from 2007.

For sure there will be a skill gap, but I think it is offset by new players becoming much better way faster than say 2006 newcomers. The information and guides out there really help.

Ever since Brawl, only Melee loyalists played the game, basically, so only good players played competitively. EVO, Smash 4, E3, and The Smash Bros brought floods of new players which lowered the average skill level. EVO 2013 - current is the easiest time to enter the scene

This game is easier to learn now than ever.

By starting now you are benefiting from the experience of the thousands of players who came before you.
The tactics and techniques that took years to develop and perfect have mostly been distilled into quick tutorial videos which can get you up and playing the real competitive core of the game pretty quickly.

People starting now have fewer bad habits, progress faster, and have way more resources than every group of smash players that played before them. This may actually be the best time to start.

As many others have said, you have all the resources you could ever want now to help ease yourself into the game. If you're just starting out, don't worry about comparing yourself to other players; just focus on improving your own skills if you want to get better.

It's never been easier. There's a wealth of information out there to help you get better. I'm a big fan of "The Melee Library" that was posted on the SSBM subreddit. And with 20XX, there's no excuse for not having your tech skill down.
