I feel I am struggling with being able to gain intel when playing opponents. I understand very good players begin to pick up on habits very fast and exploit them. What should I be looking for in first games against other tournament players and how can I learn to remember so I can exploit them later?
Thanks!

What I do to pick up on habits is pay very close attention to what they do when approaching or reacting. For example, if your opponent is playing Marth, and he likes to approach with short hop nairs, and you notice that he does this most of the time, then next time he does it, you can react accordingly. Same goes for how he reacts. If he likes to shield grab aerials, then try grabbing him instead of actually using the aerial. Basically just pay attention to the moves and options he most frequents and take advantage of them.

A lot of people get up from the ledge the same way every time so it is easy to figure that out and punish accordingly.

Also, try to look for teching habits. Some players like to tech towards/away from center stage more often than not, so you can sometimes make reads based off of that. It won't work against Mang0 though, because he does randomized techs (making a rapid circular motion with the control stick right before teching so that even you don't know which way you'll go).

Here's something you can do that will help you get better at this in general.

When you play, you are likely focusing mostly on your character. Instead, start focusing more your opponent's character and trying to figure out what they're going to do next and using this information to counter them.

A lot of people reinforce the (IMO, bad) habit of watching their character when they practice tech skill. This can turn into an unfortunate focus on your character during gameplay in some attempt to make using your tech more comfortable.

When you are practicing tech, you should be practicing to do it blind, because you should be watching your opponent more than yourself. You are a known quantity, you should be comfortable enough with your character that they will do what you are expecting them to. It's honestly not an easy thing to do, but it's a very important skill to have.

Some things to look out for, horribly organized:

Teching patterns

When they like to use their dj

DI habits/mistakes

Baits they fall for

Platform camping habits

DD habits (how long do they DD for?)

Edgeguarding habits (do they commit too soon? When and why)

Recovery habits (similar but opposite to edgeguarding)

Options they choose in neutral (are they spamming anything? Grab heavy? Laser happy?)

Options they choose for combos (so you have a better idea as to how to DI when you must make a read)
