While Genesis 4 understandably has the spotlight this weekend, an event featuring Australia's best has been happening concurrently: the GvP Invitational.

Hosted by GvP, a New South Wales-based events team, the top players of every Australian region have been brought together to compete in an invite-only bracket that will decide which scene is the best.

The event's livestream. It will go online when the bracket starts.

Before you catch the event's last leg on stream at 10:00AM (UTC + 11) today, here's what you need to know about the players who qualified for top 8. The full bracket can also be found here.

Upper Bracket Semi-Finals
Winner proceeds to Upper Bracket Finals, Loser proceeds to Lower Bracket Quarterfinals.

A King and a Former King

Poppt1 (Perth,:4ness:) vs Jezmo (Queensland, :4diddy:)
Poppt1 is Perth's best player, ruling over the relatively isolated region with an iron fist. Extremely efficient with Ness, he utilizes the character's unique mobility options to his advantage. His familiarity with the character extends to the point that a grab from him at certain percents will almost always result in a back-throw knockout.

Jezmo was once Queensland's top dog, but inactivity knocked him off the list. While he was active, he dominated his region and consistently performed at both regionals and nationals. He is also one of the few Australian players to have traveled to the United States, having placed 129th at Genesis 3 last year.

Fitness and Foxiness
Waveguider
(ACT (Australian Capital Territory), :4wiifit::4greninja:) vs Duon (Victoria, :4fox::4littlemac:)

Waveguider, the big boss of Australia's capital region, is a player who needs little introduction. He is known across the globe for his amazing mastery of Wii Fit Trainer and Greninja. Fast paced and precise, his playstyle has earned him the admiration of of local and international smashers alike. In fact, he almost took a set off of Umeki, one of Japan's best Peach specialists, at Battle Arena Melbourne 8.

A dual Fox and Mac specialist, Duon is most likely the best player in the country for both characters. Coming off of a major win at SXC, he's been on the cross hairs of many as of late. Aside from his feats as a player, he is also the artist behind almost every Australian scene's PR image.

Lower Bracket Eights
Winner proceeds to Lower Bracket Quarterfinals, Loser is eliminated.

Speed vs Power

MapleMage (ACT ,:4falcon:) vs Jesse (Sydney, :4charizard:)

One of Australia’s original Wi-Fi warriors, ACT's MapleMage has the ability to play almost any character at a tournament standard level, but when he gets his hands on the Falcon he becomes an absolute beast, famous for his trademark mastery of Falcons back air and creative combos.

Jesse is known in many circles as the 'Macho Man Randy Savage' of Sydney. Once Australia's top Luigi main, he recently dropped the boy in green for Charizard. Even with the character change, he remains one of Sydney's best players and has been for the entirety of Smash Wii U's lifespan.

The Veteran and the Upstart

Luco (Sydney, :4ness::4lucas:) vs Pazx (ACT, :4diddy:)

Sydney's gentle boy wonder, Luco is a dedicated Mother series fan and uses the PK duo Ness and Lucas almost exclusively. While he's been around for a while, it was only recently that he exploded to the absolute top level of the Australian scene. Ranked 4th on the national power rankings, he shows no signs of slowing down.

Pazx is a player who’s been on the up recently. He showed up people's radars with a fantastic performance at Final Fight 5, taking out many top players along the way. With a new found attitude and love for competing, he is definitely a player to keep an eye on.
