I've looked through youtube and google a bit, and can't find this. At least not that I would know if this has any specific name attached to it, but...

In Smash 4 (and Brawl as well, not sure about PM/Melee) some characters (like Sheik, but maybe any character can do it, and maybe its just easier with Sheik) if you run towards the ledge, then tap the opposite direction right before you'd fall off, your character actually just descends and grabs the ledge.

Even without edge-hogging being a thing anymore, I can definitely use it to position myself for an edgeguard with this.

But uh..does this have an official name? Cuz I'm 99.99% sure it's been discovered already XP

I'm pretty sure you're just inputting in the backwards direction right after you go off the ledge to reverse the air speed and so be near enough to the ledge to grab on. It shouldn't work with Shulk because he has a hard time changing direction in air. Anyways, I'm almost certain this is not a new technique or anything.

Yeah, I figured, I just thought it was weird I wasn't finding it.

Also, I don't think I'm simply reversing the air speed, because when I snap back, I'm still ON the stage, the character just sorta, props him or herself onto the ledge for some reason.

I mean that COULD be an explanation, but it doesn't physically look like it... XP

Have you tried it in 1/4x speed?

I haven't o.o I will tomorrow, I guess XP

It looks pretty much exactly like this, btw

Except the input I use is different, and (apparently) easier? XP

This was actually highlighted by Nate Bildorf on the Treehouse Stream at E3.

Basically, each character has a little animation they do upon dashing off the edge, and you can move back towards the edge while this is happening to catch it.

Furthermore, if you hold the stick in the direction you just dashed in after going off the edge and having that little animation play out, and continue holding it and land on the ground, your character will actually continue their dash animation rather than walking.

These things didn't happen in past games.

The animation upon dashing off an edge didn't happen in past games, is what I mean. They added that as a visual aid.

However, in past games, you did have to input another dash to continue dashing even if you had just dashed off another ledge.

Okay, so in past games, it WAS possible to just run to the ledge, then tap back, and grab the ledge without a jump?

@ SuaveChaser SuaveChaser - Maybe just try it the method I found out? The worst that would happen is you input it too early is you'd dash back to the opposite direction, and doing it too late would simply cause you to fall of the ledge normally. The video's method definitely seems harder.

In Brawl, yes, you could. Not in 64 and Melee though, as you can't grab ledges with your back being to the ledge.

I'm having trouble running off the ledge and grabbing it as Little Mac. He is so fast I just fall to my death or have to jump to grab the ledge. What am I doing wrong? How exactly am I supposed to do this?

You're probably tapping back too late. Practice doing it in slower speeds in training mode, that should give you an easier timeframe to do it in. Though I doubt Little Mac can get a lot of benefit from this, since his bair is...just decent, at best. xD It does grant invinciblity though, so there's that.

It doesn't just have to be BAir. By trumping the ledge, if your opponent grabs the ledge again, they no longer get invincibility. This gives Mac a free Down Smash. If they don't grab the ledge, LM can usually punish their landing.
This is pretty nice for Mac and especially Kirby and Robin, since both have a fantastic BAir.

Any fast bAir will do really, or any dSmashes with great hitboxes, it's all about getting rid of the invincibility.
