Grab/shield+attack as seperate commands

Hello smashers and developers. Quick question:

I've always noticed, as everyone has at one point, that the grab button will act as a shield when pressed at the wrong moment. I understand this is user error. Anyhoo. I presume the game is coded to use the attack+shield command in order to execute the grab even though it has its own button. This seems like an unnecessary step, and one that would be forever appreciated if circumvented, but I'm the not one that knows what exactly is going on behind the game's coding and mechanics and all that so I'm coming here to see what's possible.

Simply put: Would it be feasible to have the game execute a grab button command without it using shield+attack?

Possibly, but it would probably cause a lot of complaining from players who shuffl nairs with Z. There's just not much point in changing it when it would mess up even a few people, and everyone else is used to it.

Does the game need to attack+shield in order to use grab as an attack? I just want grab to not activate shields.

Would it be possible to have an option in the player tag control set-up thing to remove the shield+attack nonsense? I can appreciate people using it for L-cancelling and whatnot, but I would rather have Z just grab personally if it could be set up for my tag.

The more options the better. The game, or games, have always presented the player with the "grab" button, and yet, never explained that sometimes the grab button will shield. It's sloppy game design.

It doesn't even have to be an input that replaces z, if such a new input is even possible (doubtful).

Smash is naturally a 3 button game. Z is a short cut for shield + attack.

We'd literally have to create a new button, who knows what work that would entail and if it'd be worth it.

I like the idea but People would need the z button the way it is in order to dacus.

Ha, I forgot all about dacus. I actually use that all the time...

It'd be nice to have options, but I guess Z should probably stay how it is, especially if it would be too much of a hassle. I suppose I'll just have to deal with the occasional accidental shield when I go for a grab.

I removed the springs from my controllers L and R buttons and now I dacus with cdown up R (attack). This frees up Z as my jump button which allows access of X Y A B and C stick with the right thumb immediately after issuing a jump. It allows me to do retreating Fairs and approaching Bairs (for lack of better description) and still maintain the ability to DACUS. its my favourite controller layout I've ever had. It also allows tap jump to be off (more freedom with the control stick without any accidental jumps) in addition, jump canceled actions (JC grab or JC smashes or anything really) are much easier with Z as jump. Anyway I often end up using Y (grab) as an attack for aerials and often end up teching upon being hit because its technically the grab button which includes shields.

More on topic: Grab and shield would be nice as separate buttons because I will often drop shields and use grab, only to see my shield go back up. Its annoying but I guess thats my fault for having sucky inputs.

Yeah, it really irritates me if I hit grab after wavelanding and my shield is put up rather than an actual grab. The punishing sucks.

I'm going to go ahead and necro this because I know Brawl modding is much more advanced than Melee modding. I know for tournament players it probably isn't feasible, but are there any codes that exist that can make Z button just grab without the shield? I suppose you can say I'm a casual player although I play a lot, and I'd love to be able to just grab and never have to worry about the shield.
