Grab During Guard

So its happens to me roughly 4-5 times per match, usually because it results in my dying. In my flailing attempt to Z Cancel my delays from short hop Dair's.. my Z into (anything using A) results in me throwing off a grab. Which usually isn't an enourmous trouble for the level that i play at, but if i play Samus or link, usually samus, throwing a huge miss grab means 50%+ dmg, if not a stock.

Is there a way to disable Guard Grab when hitting A from guard?!?

Your presses are mistimed. Do you mash z while trying to z-cancel? You shouldn't, just press it at the right time. Same goes for the a button. Instead of finding a way to disable something (which is not even possible), learn not to do it. Timing your button presses is very important and you shouldn't have too many unnecessary inputs.

Use the ask a question thread next time ;)

You shouldn't be shielding after you land. That means you are holding the Z button too long. Try letting go of it sooner.

Timing is different, i'd have to learn when each characters's template touches the ground, to get that timed right, and often i just end up spamming most moves to get them off ASAP...
If im doing something basic like Uair with falcon 4 or 6 times, i just spam the crap out of a and hold up =_="

smash 64 is a very lenient game, you have 20 frames in which to input Z before hitting the ground, which really shouldn't vary significantly from character to character

link u-air and d-air are easy to cancel btw you guys dont even know

pikachu f-air is the one you need to spam for

That's why I'm saying you should learn your timings. When you do, you're actually much more accurate and things really come "ASAP", unlike when mashing (which might seem counter-intuitive).

yeah you should pretty much never mash buttons to get what you want, whether it be an edgeguard, combo, DI opportunity, combo escape, getting out of a dk cargo, lag cancel, smash attack, you name it. always just learn the timings of what you are trying to do. there is a training mode for a reason lol

The thing I'm wondering is what kind of controller you're using. Like others said, you might be mistiming the press of the Z button, but if you're using a controller that has a spring mechanism on the button you configured Z on, then it could be that it doesn't spring back to it's zero-state fast enough. That was something that happened to me before, was a pain..
