So i was playing a CPU just messing around and when i was grabbed oddly ( not the first time i performed it ) i immediately broke out of the grab. I had a high amount of damage on me and it seemed to show that little ring just as though i've been grabbed and i flew out of the grab like normal but what confused me is that i broke out of the grab exactly when i was grabbed and i couldn't do it again.

Sometimes this can occur if you were on a rising platform when he grabbed you (or a platform rises out of the ground while you are being grabbed).

Tap/Smash DI sometimes let's you break out of grabs at high percentages in Melee, I'm honestly not sure in Project M. You could be doing one or the other withou realizing it.

Tap DI is performed by tapping the control stick away from whose grabbed you, allowing you to escape.

Smash DI is the same, but with the c-stick.

What that's not DI at all what are you talking about lol
and that's not how grab breaks work, it doesn't matter what directions you press, all that matters is the number of inputs
that's not accurate for any of the games

I'm pretty sure this isn't accurate. It's only the number of inputs that matter as DrinkingFood said.

Also Tap DI is not a thing. You can Smash DI with both the joystick and the c-stick. Smash DI is when you smash either stick during hitlag (so when you freeze in place before you launch). There is no hitlag when you are grabbed, so Smash DI is not a thing for grabs (or throws actually, except for jigg's f-throw afaik). Smash DI simply moves you a set distance before launch. There is also Automatic Smash DI which is a bit different (and easier). It also moves you a set distance, but it doesn't do it until a frame after you start launching from knockback and it moves you less than Smash DI iirc. You can do this simply by holding the joystick or c-stick. For both Smash DI and Automatic Smash DI, if both the joystick and the c-stick are used that the same time, it will only read the c-stick (in other words. the c-stick takes priority). This is useful, since for normal DI it only reads the joystick, so you can easily do Automatic Smash DI and normal DI on the same hit.

@ artofskjet artofskjet It could be a glitch... The two ways I know this can happen that are known are:
-if you are grounded and platform rises lifting the person you grabbed away.
-if Pokemon Stadium transforms when someone is grabbed, the grab will break (I think regardless of where you are on the stage).

This will actually happen if the grabee is positioned higher than than grabber, and the grabee can't be moved down. Just go to metal cavern and try to grab someone higher on the slope.

My apologies then. I recently transitioned here from IGN forums that have a small pseudo Smash Scene. It was home to a lot of "different" terminology, and false tech information, which is why I came to SmashBoards.
So again, sorry guys. I'll try to make sure I know what's going down.
