Grab Breaking

Hey guys,

I was just wondering if there was a technique to grab-breaking very quickly, especially against DKs. I feel that after they grab me in the **** tent i'm screwed unless they mess up. By watching others, I know that I have some hope of escape whenever a DK utilizes a forward throw (I'm on his back), but by just mashing buttons it only works a fraction of the time.

Is there something I can do to consistently break DKs fthrow?

Thanks a lot :)

EDIT: Being the douche I am I neglected the ask a question get an answer thread.. I'm re-posting this there, sorry about that..

Yea, there are a couple different strategies.

Spin the stick

Mash buttons

Alternate A+Left - B+Right on the joystick, you can also do up/down.

If you're doing it as fast as possible alternating A/B and left/right is the fastest way to break, followed by mashing, followed by spinning the stick.

Right? As soon as they get on DKs back they break it.. Are you definite that there isn't some sort of strategy? I vaguely recall someone telling me you spam up A down B repeatedly, lol.

I press Left as fast as possible, its just a matter of how fast you can input the joystick

Btw, the same methods can be used to break out of stun after your shield is broken, you're been put to sleep by Jiggle's Sing, or are stuck inside of Yoshi's egg lay.

Hmm, I suppose I'm not as certain as I thought, I'm at work and can't test it now. I could simply be confusing it with another smash game or just be plain wrong.

i thought the time to break out was directly (or inversely) related to the amount of damage you have

In other smash games the fastest way to break out is to do nothing but hold up lol (wtf). In this game, I personally mash.

I don't believe that is true for brawl (I never heard of this either.)

on another note, for certain characters, you prefer not to break also due to brawl's weird physics engine

If you mash one button (a, empty, a, empty, ...) or one direction (left, empty, left, empty, ...) the minimum number of frames is 48.
If you mash two button (a, b, a, b, ...) or two directions (left, right, left, right, ...) the minimum number of frames is 34 (twice as many inputs).
If you mash a direction and a button (left a, right b, left a, right b, ...) the minimum number of frames is 27.

What the **** am I talking about? If you spam one direction, you'll never escape. Then there is a minimal angle at which two inputs will be registered. It means that if you spam up and left, you won't be able to escape either. I don't know the exact value, but left and upright works. This explains why rotating is bad. You waste time inputting a lot of unnecessary intermediate values that won't help you escape.

Looks like my first post was pretty bad (confusing and with mistakes). I said the number of frames from the moment DK input R (or A or whatever works) the second time (first time grabs, second time goes to cargo hold). However, from here there are 19 frames before you can start inputting something. Then you need 15 inputs.
So:
spamming A: 48-19=29 (you waste 14 frames in between the A's).
spamming A-B: 34-19= 15
spamming A+left-B+right: 27-19= 8.

Hope everything's clear now.

Does the rule about a certain joystick direction difference needed also apply to shieldbreaks? (and Puff sing lol)

Yes. In fact, mashing one direction is registered as one input. It can't be visible with DK, since you need 15 to escape (you get stuck at 14), but there is an impact on shieldbreak and sing, since it will lower the number of frames by 4 (as would one input of another button do).

Sing is pretty similar to shieldbreak: there's a given amount of frames (375 for sing) from which you subtract your percent (maximum -300) and subtract 4 for each input.

THE BEST WAY: Rotate Stick, mash A, B, Z, R. I was told Z doesn't do anything but w/e lol (Works with Yoshi egg too). Also, I don't thing you can get out of normal grabs, you just have to wait for it to break. Which sucks =\.
