Hi, I just joined Smashboards, and I'm interested in getting into competitive Super Smash Bros for Wii U. I use Bowser and Jigglypuff, though I'm better with Bowser. I have some questions about smash tournaments, so here they are:
1. What is the age restriction on most smash tournaments?
2. Are you allowed using gamepads at most smash tournaments?
3. How can I get better at Smash Wii U? I can easily defeat level 9 cpu's, but I don't think I'm tournament level yet.
4. Is requesting a double blind character select a good idea?
Thanks for helping!

1. Most smash tournaments don't have age restrictions but some do depeends.
2. Yes
3. Honestly just play the game and learn there is no "secret" to getting better.
4.No IMO.

You can find online tournaments here.
But if you need to find tournaments in your area you can find tournament listings here.

1. There is usually no restriction, unless the venue is a bar or something similar.
2. Gamepads are usually allowed, but most TOs recommending using the Gamecube Controller
3. Learn your character, watch videos of good players using your character, practice.
4. Double Blinding your opponents is a great idea; it makes it so your opponent cannot CP you at the CSS.

Thanks to everyone for their help, I really appreciate it. :b:
Now that I read your responses, I have 2 more questions:
1. At what level of play do tier lists matter?
2. What kind of tournament should I start at? Is Get On My Level 2015 a good place to start?

1. Any competitive level. A tier list is a representation of which characters are more likely to win a tournament. If you're not going to tournaments, it doesn't matter, but picking a character at the top of a tier list and playing the character well will maximize your chances of victory.
2. Starting at ANY event is good, just be prepared to lose.

1. Tiers will tell you what is viable in tournaments and what top level players mostly use. But you don't have to follow them play whatever character you want :D.
2. You can start any level just learn and you'll do good.

Ya but it's all opinion and nobody should force him if he wants to main Bowser let him main Bowser. And I've seen plenty of tournaments where low tier characters win so it's mostly the player skill not the character. But don't get me wrong tiers have something to do with it.

Tier lists are not opinions, they're usually based on tournament results.

I would recommend having knowledge on how to play 1 or 2 top tier characters so in case you ever make it to finals in a tournament you could have that under your belt just to be safe... but stick with who your want to play with mainly

Alright, I decided that I will continue to use Bowser and Jigglypuff because the Metagame is still early in development and the Smash Back Room has not yet released a Smash Wii U tier list. Though when the tier list comes out I'll see what happens/needs to be done. I also decided that I will probably be going to GOML 2015, though I need to start practicing with another controller because I just figured out they don't allow gamepads.:ohwell: Thanks for the help! Now, what controller do you think feels the closest to a gamepad? Thanks in advance!

Wii U Pro Controller is the closest to a Gamepad.
I'd recommend switching to a GCC though.

1.) If you're old enough to talk and play, you'll be allowed in (unless it's at a bar)
2.) Usually allowed, though almost everyone recommends/uses GCC, I recommend switching to GCC.
3.) Just practice, and keep in mind tourneys help you learn, just go for the tournament.
4.) Yeah, just don't do it too often and it's only really necessary if you're playing someone that would counter you hard if they knew your character.
