You can take the controller apart and remove one of the springs, but if you have never done it before you might not want to try because you can mess it up.

Also, is the nintendo logo on the front of the controller? Because there are a bunch of 3rd party new controllers that look like real controllers, but are pieces of crap. I got tricked into buying one and the triggers were really loud.

Yeah it appears to be legit, the logo is there and the box it came in had all the Japanese writing on it and everything. I am fairly sure it is legit, and I think maybe I will try opening up one of my other controllers and seeing what I would be working with, that might be a good fix. Thanks!

Another idea would be to just press the button a **** ton of times and try to weaken the springs like that.

Been doing that for a couple hours now, after a while I got pretty angry at it then just started smashing the **** out of it. Still hasn't worked but I'm still hoping.

Your best bet is to take it apart or to just get over it

white controller triggers are different than the other controllers. they lock when pressed at an angle and are annoying. I just replaced the bottom half of my controller with an older one(with older l and r buttons).

Did you buy a special screwdriver that has the 3 things? I don't have a screwdriver that fits the controllers screws

It's the same for my controller, also white official one. The triggers annoy me too, I'll probably end up buying an older controller and replacing/using the old controller instead. It just feels off for some reason.

1. Buy triwing screwdriver¹
2. Take the controller apart, unscrew the shoulder button plate
3a. Take the rubber plate out and perforate it at 2-4 spots with a needle or scissor tip if you want to decrease the volume of the click as well as the click resistance
3b. Put a very small amount of silicon grease at the inside of the back part of the shell, where the main part of the shoulder button usually rubs against if you want to decrease the sliding friction.
4. Put it back together.

¹I like this one most, but it’s sold out and I don’t know if it’s available somewhere else. The cheap and widely available clear red do the job as well, but the risk of damaging the screws is higher because the fit isn’t perfect.

Thanks! I will look for the triwing screwdriver at a local Home Depot and try what you suggested

Tell me how you like it because eventually I'm going to try Kadano's method myself

See if you can even record the whole process, that'd be awesome
I can do that today or tomorrow if you want. I have a Sony PSEye webcam now with which I can record in 480p60 in good quality. Now I can finally showcase all of my hardware, yeah. I won’t do it if there’s no interest though, but now that you expressed it, I’ll at least do the shoulder slider fix.

Yeah man I would be very interested as well, it would make me feel like I'm not about to ruin my controller haha

I bought a generic white one and the trigger is loud, but it seems sort of hard to push down, making it difficult to wave dash. Are the Nintendo controllers triggers easier to just tap, because the generic take a pretty heavy push to shield, let alone wave dash?

I would assume thats it, whatever generic one you got just has different shoulder buttons. You could try what Kadano said about greasing up the area behind the shoulder if it is resistant. Or you could try what I did, although I don't know how much it will help with shoulder resistance. Also if it is fairly new you may just need to break it in

So you just reduced the noise but nothing else? I'm glad you recorded though. I'm going to try Kadano's puncturing hole method when he releases his vid because more so than the sound is just how stiff one of mine is and I want it to be like butter like my old one to reduce strain

Gotcha, well if it means anything mine is a little bit less stiff and I think the big thing wasn't the lubricant I added but it was simply taking it apart and re-assembling it. When I put it back together it was different from before, so maybe that could help you. But definitely try what Kadano said to do, it seems legit

Thanks, mine also happens to not register the input even though it clicks if you push it in going from the very top (from a point closest to the face of controller), I think I've seen another controller that has some of this but my old one will register fine at any extreme angle. I wonder what that's about.

Hmm my best bet would be that it is the rubber part on the bottom of the shoulder itself isn't getting the pressure applied to the place it is needed to touch the part of the controller that registers the button click. That is pretty confusing but once you take it apart you'll see exactly what I mean. Also I just tried my WD40 thing with my White Controller and it was successful :-)

Your controller may just need to be worn out a little bit. Think of a new controller like a new pair of shoes. You have to break them out and get them a little less stiff. Try hitting the R button a lot over and over again and she if the noise changes at all.

Thanks for the response, I spent a couple of days binging some shows on Netflix while spamming R for hours (my fingers turned to jello) and it didn't work. What I did to fix it was take it apart and apply WD-40 to the shoulder springs. Although I do occasionally notice an oily scent when using it haha

Yeah I stopped believing in wearing mine out as well, it might work for some but I don't think it's an effective strategy

Idk I mean its gonna naturally break in its just I think for the problem I was having that wasn't doing the trick

The video should be here in ~2 hours: http://youtu.be/tL3zzBMGPaY

I did this very quickly, I have to leave from home now. If it’s too bad, tell me and I’ll redo it better.

Thanks so much for this I think it'll help a lot of people (there's about a dozen threads now on reddit with complaints of the White/Silver controllers stiffness, though also partly from that lack of metal bar.. what exactly is bad about the lack of metal bar again?) http://www.reddit.com/r/smashbros/search?q=triggers&restrict_sr=on

Have you gotten more time to test it? Do you think someone or you could ever reach a point where it's too little resistance and cause a loss of accuracy in the Airdodge/Wavedash (one of mine is close to no click at all, but I still find it nice)? So the Silicone grease and Wavedash 40 were both new things you've never tried before on it, do you like it even more now; so now the spring as well as the big plastic trigger piece are both lubed up to slide easier which you enjoy? Were the two new small holes you made in the hard press rubber piece a noticeable effect beyond the one you already had?

The total resistance before I did the video was already below the threshold where I felt really comfortable with it. It feels slightly better now, but as I had already done the rubber plate perforation and always had the metal bar in, this improvement is hardly noticeable.

The silicon grease mod is something I already did one or two times for a friend’s controller.

My friend uses this newer silver controller, possibly because of the lack of metal bar, the whole thing resonates/vibrates after the click annoyingly as well as some loose spring or something makes noise as well when it clicks. Maybe some of that is fixed when you cut holes in the rubber mesh thing to make it weaker as well but idk.

Does anyone know a fix for this? I've noticed it in multiple controllers in the past, though it seems to go away and come back. I'm pretty sure it's the spring, but I'm not sure why or how to fix it. I feel that the above mentioned fixes wouldn't address that issue.

It goes away after a while. It bothered me too at first, but I was playing with the same controllers I got with the console until a few months ago. You just need some time to let your controller break in.

I know that issue, and I fix it nowadays (I knew a lot less when I wrote the posts above) by slightly incrementally pushing / rotating and releasing the spring of the shoulder triggers with a screwdriver (while they are assembled). After a couple of tries, the noise disappears, you just have to find the correct position.
