(Feel free to lock if this is too closely related to another topic.)

With inspiration taken from a couple of threads focused on pet peeves and disconnecting from matches, I decided to make this general thread focused on what players think is good online etiquette. It could also possibly help other players here become more aware of what they're doing online.

So basically, what are things that you believe players should
/n't do when playing online and why?

I have the habit of taunting when people SD, whether it be due to actual failure to recover, or lag preventing the recovery from happening. I have no sportsmanship.

Just stay out if you know you know your internet connection isn't good enough to have generally stable matches.

Not attacking an opponent who is clearly AFK. (Though, some stages might take care of it anyway.) Sometimes life interrupts when you're waiting on the practice screen and I bet it would suck for them to come back and see the defeat screen.

Maybe this is just me, but I let my opponent finish a taunt, if it's not RIGHT in the middle of battle. Sometimes when the game starts, I don't do anything for a minute, so they also just stand there, and we tend to taunt and whiff and just joke around. It makes it a lot more enjoyable and makes me feel like I'm playing a real person. I'll also SD if I see them mess up a recovery, or die sub-30% for some random stupid reason. I like to spam taunts... but in a fun way. I'm only spiteful when I'm genuinely annoyed by their playstyle, or am getting beat up pretty badly and actually manage to take a stock off.

If we are both on opposite ends of the stage, and he/she taunts I will let the taunt finish. I expect the same treatment in return, however often times that isn't the case.

To me, good sportsmanship basically just consists of playing each match to the best of your ability, and not rage quitting or sandbagging.

If my opponent SDs before 20% on the first stock, I tend to SD myself too to make the match fair.

If my opponent messes up when they try to recover or SD's off the stage I get disappointed and demand a rematch with the same characters until I get a satisfying match. Rare for that to happen cause some people just switch to another character and don't try to redeem themselves from their previous loss in the last match. I really want that person to try again, and to beat me the next time or not end up in the same fate as the last battle. It feels like a satisfying match that way.

I don't count my wins as a victory unless it was a good match or if the other player was playing with a spamming type pattern. I like to have fair matches not terrible ones.

I don't even taunt, unless the player taunts me after a kill, then I'll do the same to him or maybe not taunt at all.

In online matches with my friends, if the connection between the both of us lags between the match I won't count it or we both stop doing anything until the lag clears away.

I'd just like to have good, clean matches online, but sometimes the connection just prevents that during the match. I generally don't like it when players taunt, to me it just feels like they're sort of mocking me in a way. I probably couldn't explain that one well, but I tried to get my point across as best as I could.

Yeah, I forgot to say, I'll taunt after getting a kill, or when I'm decently spaced from the enemy, just for fun and giggles. But there have been several players I've fought who make sure to use that opportunity to attack and get me off the edge. It actually irks me a LOT, and it's usually players who, through their playstyle, I find to be kind of standoffish. So I'm simultaneously not that surprised that they'd do it, and a lot less playful about the match.

I usually only taunt at the very end of a battle if I win, and only if it's a taunt that I think is cute and not annoying/bad mannered. Taunts like Pac Mans ghosts spinning over his head, Villager's dance, Toon/Link's fairy, and DeDeDe's crouch where he lays on his side etc are cute and not annoying and I doubt would frustrate the opponent. Other taunts like Peach's, Dark Pit's, ZSS's, and Lucina's mostly seem bad mannered to me and I would never use them online, only if I'm playing with friends and they know I'm not just trying to be rude

Pretty much this. I think no1 is entitled to finish taunts or expected to SD if the opponents SDs first. You may do so if you wish, but I would never call bad sporstmanship on someone who does not.

The only thing I'd like to see is both players waiting for little lag spikes to end in order to play properly. I had a couple of matches where we had like 5fps due to lag, and both players just walked towards the edges of the stage, and when normal play could be continued, we did. Felt great.

I am curious. Does it offend you when my character puts on a mask for 1 second or says "I can not lose" after you die?
