Gliding vs Fast-Falling

I remember being told that Gliding is counter-intuitive because you have to press Down to start gliding. If this is the case, will it be possible for characters like MetaKnight, Pit, and Charizard to fast-fall because pressing Down sends them into Glide mode?

I remember it being that the jump button remains held and the characters will flip into a glide. Regardless, the controls can be set by themselves.

Huh? You hold the jump button or press backwards to start gliding, not down.

according to the dojo, tilting back-forward quickly or holding jump is how you glide, NOT pressing down.
