Gimp popup sig

i am trying to make a popup sig using gimp, but no matter what i do i always end up with a white backround

any help would be greatly appriceated

No. When you make a new document go to advanced options>background>transparency.

Maybe so, but doesn't help if he doesn't save as .png, it's almost the only formats that allow transparency.

when if comes up to export it, should i merge the visible layers, or flatten the image?
(the backround is transparent)

I believe I usually merge visible layers.
